Did you go into it with any info on where it fits in terms of film history? That can sometimes give you an appreciation for older works.

This. TVTropes used to call it "Seinfeld Is Unfunny", I personally call it the Watchmen Effect, but it's a common problem.

OP, Suspiria didn't blow you away because you've seen every shot in it replicated in half a dozen other films. Sometimes BETTER, because practice makes perfect. It's so influential that its impact has become completely diluted.

But ah, if you could have seen it back when it was new, when the only place to see it was the run-down theater in the sketchy neighborhood, the half-alive place that showed weird foreign genre films... you'd have shit in your pants. Then you'd have shit in a few other people's pants for good measure.

What a coincidence, I've really been wanting to see this movie! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it OP. horror is just really subjective. You always hear stories about people laughing at the Exorcist, while other people think it's the scariest thing ever made. It's hard reccing horror films I've found, because what I find scary could just be really lame to someone else.

I saw it over the summer with diet_poison. It's worth seeing, if only for its historical value and use of color!

70s horror has always appealed to me in ways modern horror rarely does.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I mainly want to see it because of the use of colour. I don't really like the modern trend of horror being y'know desaturated, kinda like the first secret posted here, haha. The more colourful the better!

I liked it, though I didn't really find it scary. I think I'm missing the point of horror though XD

I liked but didn't love that movie, and here's why - the girls just didn't make sense. Their behaviour didn't make sense, their obsession over where the teachers go at night didn't make sense. I couldn't fucking place it ans it threw the whole movie off for me

Later I read up about it and found that the girls were originally supposed to be 12-13ish, but people were like WTF ARGENTO YOU CAN'T SLAUGHTER 12 YEAR OLDS ONSCREEN! NOT IN GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOUR! so he aged em up to 18ish but didn't think (or i guess forgot) to adjust the dialogue. Suddenly it all made sense. So me and the film parted friends =)

...that actually makes a lot of sense. wow.

If you're comparing it to recent blockbuster horror films, it will be sadly lacking. Think of it as a b-movie with almost no budget that turned out surprisingly well because of imaginative film makers, in a time when effects was ketchup blood and cardboard requisites painted in someone's garage, and you might be able to see it in a more forgiving light.

I think a lot of the suspense of the movie has to do with the musical score.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I came down here to say this! Yes, Suspiria didn't scare the pants off me or anything, but the music was beautiful and creepy and I loved it.

I enjoyed it, but I didn't find it scary either. I don't really find stuff in movies scary though. I think I'm missing the point.

It's a good movie to watch with friends. But then again...I pretty much never watch movies by myself...so again I miss the point. oops

Suspiria didn't do anything for me, either. It's amazing to me how it can be so aesthetic-driven and have no atmosphere at all.

You might like The Messiah of Evil. It's similar visually, but it's actually well-written with a very mysterious, creepy atmosphere.
