Did you go into it with any info on where it fits in terms of film history? That can sometimes give you an appreciation for older works.

This. TVTropes used to call it "Seinfeld Is Unfunny", I personally call it the Watchmen Effect, but it's a common problem.

OP, Suspiria didn't blow you away because you've seen every shot in it replicated in half a dozen other films. Sometimes BETTER, because practice makes perfect. It's so influential that its impact has become completely diluted.

But ah, if you could have seen it back when it was new, when the only place to see it was the run-down theater in the sketchy neighborhood, the half-alive place that showed weird foreign genre films... you'd have shit in your pants. Then you'd have shit in a few other people's pants for good measure.
