Are there lots of coffee shop and high school AUs, too?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it's much of a secret to say that most fanfic writers aren't very good.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What about American writers who didn't go to college? Do you see a difference with their writing, or does it still read similarly to you a lot of the time?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What's important here is, there's someone we can look down on.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha. Well put.

I'm pretty sure OP can't even be sure where the writer is from. They wouldn't unless the author chooses to disclose or if its extremely visible English is not their first language. I'm pretty sure if they read my stuff they would probably also categorize me as "American white college kid" because to be frank that is just the fandom expectation.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. This is the sort of thing I'm wondering about, too, especially in regards to determining if they're even American in the first place.

I am from the U.S., so at least OP would have the "American" part right, but I have no idea how OP would categorize my writing outside of that.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, don't worry, I'm here to help.

Give me the number of your local police department and I will call them to let them know that someone is pointing a gun at your head forcing you to read these fanfics. You will be saved, OP. Your suffering is over.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Shut the fuck up and go jam a rusty pole up your uretha, dickpiss

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Shhh

It's okay now. We got you out of there. You're free.

Everything's alright. Shhh

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh look! Potty mouth!anon is here tonight.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Constructing good arguments isn't your strong side, OP. Everybody has skills they could improve.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What is a "uretha"?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
A singer. >.> Uretha Franklin.

What does this even mean.

...Well I actually love the fic in this fandom, so.

I don't even get your insult; why does it matter who's writing the fic? (How would you even know?)

Has there been a surplus of shitty fic or AU's you aren't into lately? No fandom is going to be without those. (And again, that's a lot of assumptions.)

*shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
(How would you even know?)

Differing speech patterns, incorrect use of slang, incorrect words (lift/elevator, pavement/sidewalk, etc), places, people, brand names that are all out of place in the setting, or alternatively over use of the only brands, and slang that the writers do know.

Not OP, but yeah... little things like that give it away when Americans write British fandoms (and when Brits write American fandoms too, I'm sure). That's the whole point of Britpicking/Ameripicking, surely? So the people who live where you're writing about aren't thrown out of the narrative of your story by the small, day to day mistakes.

elaminator: (Kingsman: Harry/Eggsy (domestic))

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-10-15 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes sense regarding the American comment, but what about the college kid one? A person could make those mistakes no matter their age or level of education.

Plus, if the fic was Britpicked (skillfully) you wouldn't know it, so if the writer did their research or had help you wouldn't be able to tell. I guess OP was saying no one in Kingsman fandom used a Britpicker, and that might be true, but I find it unlikely. (I can believe most don't, though.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why so many Sherlock fics are so cringe-worthy. So many of them are so American in tone, and the randomly peppered "bloody"s just make it infinitely worse.

All the fic I've read in this fandom fit perfectly with the tone of the movie and even got Eggsy's rather unique (to Americans) slang and speech rhythm down pat.
*shrug*

Guess i've had better luck than you.

+1000

This has been my experience as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well most bad fic is written by non-native English speakers

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
...is that right? *stares*
