I'm even later to the party than usual, but since I actually do have some advice and experience(herniated disk 2 1/2 years ago \0/) here you go:

Apart from lifting with your legs and the no pivoting thing the other anon mentioned, remember to flex your abs before lifting. It stabilizes your whole torso.

Do exercises to strenghten your abs and back muscles. You may not feel like you need to since you've had your workout at work - do them anyway, it's not the same. Be careful though, don't overdo it and stop if the pain gets worse. For abs do crunches, don't do sit-ups.
My personal favorite (because I'm lazy and I can do it in my bed and it really helps relax my back as well as having a bit of a strenghtening effect): Lie on your back, legs bent (about 90° at the knees) feet on the floor. Press right heel and left shoulder down into the floor (without raising your butt or anything, you don't actually move), hold for 30 seconds, relax. Do the same with your left heel and your right shoulder. Repeat.

Hot baths and waterbottles are wonderful things.
Pain meds help break the vicious cycle of pain causing muscle spasms causing pain ... so take them if you need them.

Until you can get the cause determined try to avoid lifting heavy things, especially if the pain is radiating to (one of) your limbs or if there's a sharp localized pain when coughing or sneezing. Easier said than done since it's part of your job, but better safe than sorry.

If any of your body parts go numb (little toe and part of my foot for me) go to the ER.

Good luck finding a doctor and I hope you get better soon. Good news is - in most cases treatment is pain meds and light exercise, so chances for the pain eventually going away on its own are pretty high.

Thank you for all this advice! Not lifting things it pretty hard not to do at work. But I am doing the no pivoting and such.

I'll do those exercises as soon as I get home! I've also taken a break from jogging in the morning.

Hopefully I can get to a doctor soon. I might just go to urgent care.

Good call on the jogging. Great cardio but not easy on your back. Might be a good idea to go walking instead (or nordic walking, don't know how widespread that is in the US - better cardio than just walking and great for the back.)
