Hmmm, where do I begin? You have a good point about some people making travelling seem so easy when it isn't. I haven't been able to travel in over 10 years. But some of your points...

You don't need security guards to travel to Colombia. Seriously.

You can probably get by without any Spanish. Lots and lots of Americans travel that way. You could also learn it instead of hiring a translator. Before you go about hiring teachers... I've learned English on my own with materials I could get my hands on. It's not for everyone, but it's doable.

Basically, being poor makes travelling very hard, but not for the items you listed.

"You can probably get by without any Spanish."

Depending on the area, it's not just probably.
At least in Bogota, finding English speakers (both ESLs and natives English speakers, not all of them tourists) isn't that hard.

AYRT:

Thanks for the info :)

There's also the fact many English-speaking tourists go to places where it's hard to find a speaker (like where I live) and aren't bothered by it, which I don't think I could do, but hey, more power to them.

It's not practical to travel solo with no Spanish language fluency in the parts of Colombia where Bourdain goes. Remember, he doesn't stick to the parts with lots of tourists, he heads for off the beaten path spots. That's the whole idea behind his current show, actually.
