It genuinely annoys me when he tells the people who watch his shows that they should totally travel to Colombia or Beirut or wherever, or we're missing out. No shit, Tony! I don't have the money for a weekend trip to the next state, never mind international travel. I also don't have the money for the security guards to protect me from armed drug smugglers in a place like Colombia or a team to research all my travel plans and find me translators and fixers to guide me when I get there. OF COURSE I'M MISSING OUT.

S!B Sorry Bourdain fans. I just wish he acknowledged this awesome lifestyle isn't attainable for the majority of his audience, not because they're timid, but because they're POOR.

It is a bit irksome how people treat travel as a must-do, when to actually take even a modest trip somewhere can usually require about $500 up-front (US dollars).

I really wish it were more affordable to everyone, because travel is a life-changing experience.

I haven't been to nearly all the places I wish I could visit, and money is very much an object to me right now, but the study abroad experience I had was one of the best things I ever did. I would like a future where that's accessible to all and not just some.

Personally, considering the massive environmental cost, I wish that travel was a big lifetime event, not what middle-class and above people do three times a year. Still, maybe the study-abroad scheme is a good way to do it - you can go on a long-distance holiday but you have to stay there for at least three months?

Another great way to have an experience abroad that is not only free, it pays - TEACH ENGLISH! You can do it in East Asia (and maybe South America?) with only a bachelor's degree, in anything, and that's just for the work visa purposes. I taught for two years in Japan, and made more money than I would've with any job at home after my undergrad. Some European countries require a certification course, but if you want to do it, it isn't a bad investment, and with that certification you get paid even better and can go anywhere.

Of course, you do kind of have to save some money for start up costs - the flight over, deposit on an apartment, and such, so the movement itself is still expensive, but once the paychecks come in, life is very good.

Sing it. My dream trip is in my own country and I've been saving up for a decade for a five day trip I finally get to take next month. I haven't been on a proper holiday ever in my adult life, so this is kind of big. My husband and I even nixed a honeymoon when we got married so we could out the money down on other things and then kids came and life happened.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, I hope you have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE!!!! I am legit excited for you, lol!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like he really didn't do that on No Reservations at least - if anything the opposite. Maybe he does it more on the newer shows but that could also be something of an editorial pressure.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, where do I begin? You have a good point about some people making travelling seem so easy when it isn't. I haven't been able to travel in over 10 years. But some of your points...

You don't need security guards to travel to Colombia. Seriously.

You can probably get by without any Spanish. Lots and lots of Americans travel that way. You could also learn it instead of hiring a translator. Before you go about hiring teachers... I've learned English on my own with materials I could get my hands on. It's not for everyone, but it's doable.

Basically, being poor makes travelling very hard, but not for the items you listed.

"You can probably get by without any Spanish."

Depending on the area, it's not just probably.
At least in Bogota, finding English speakers (both ESLs and natives English speakers, not all of them tourists) isn't that hard.

AYRT:

Thanks for the info :)

There's also the fact many English-speaking tourists go to places where it's hard to find a speaker (like where I live) and aren't bothered by it, which I don't think I could do, but hey, more power to them.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's not practical to travel solo with no Spanish language fluency in the parts of Colombia where Bourdain goes. Remember, he doesn't stick to the parts with lots of tourists, he heads for off the beaten path spots. That's the whole idea behind his current show, actually.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
And here I was thinking Colombia image had improved a little.

Fwiw: no, you don't need security guards to protect you from armed drug smugglers (unless you come here to work in an anti-drug government program).

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
(But the mazorca is best in Colombia, hands down.)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I watch this show because there is no fucking way I'm going to any of these places and it's culinary escapism.

I've been to or lived in several places Anthony has gone, like Crete, Sicily, etc., and he eats some great food, but you can often find recipes, too. At least it's more interesting than most travel shows.

That's why we watch his shows.

Yeah, someday we'd love to go to Italy or Germany, and we'd dearly love to go back to Okinawa as civilians (his recent Parts Unknown episode there reminded us so much of our tours of duty there. Except, it was Kinville not Kintown when we were there and CAmp Futenma had already been shut down back in the early 90s and Henoko was never really a small place... but I digress), but for us, overseas vacations are just not financially feasible right now.

So we live vicariously through his sort of shows.

Well, I can't fault him for encouraging those with means to travel. A number of poor countries rely on tourism income.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's definitely a pet peeve of mine when people talk like just spending the money to travel someplace is a simple and doable thing for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Bourdain's a lucky man to do this for a living, but most of us would have to save up our whole lives to visit even ONE of the foreign countries he features on that show. And that's savings on top of emergency savings in case I get sick or hurt. So yeah, as much as I, too, would love to sit under an umbrella on a white sandy beach while some old dude makes me a Caipirinha and some other dudes are busy grilling me fresh caught fish, that will probably never happen. It would be nice if Bourdain remembered that.

I can understand that, it took Mum and I a couple of years of piling away our advances ($1100 every six months, at the expense of losing $80+ per fortnightly pay) which in other circumstances would be used for things like large expensive devices (TV, new whitegoods) or computer repairs/upgrades, then on top of that, in the months leading up to our departure, Mum worked hard to squirrel away another couple thousand for spending money (including paying for tours we went on).

Long story short, a lot of hard saving for a pair of pensioners, and that was for a trip to a close neighbour nation. It's easy for rich people to say "You should travel!", not so easy for us plebs to actually do it.

Hm, maybe.

It doesn't stop me from enjoying his show.

Ha ha! Right on, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Whine whine whine. International travel is not that expensive. The biggest expense is the plane ticket. After that you couch surf, stay in hostels, buy food from grocery stores etc. Have you ever done bicycle touring? Cheapest form of travel right there. You can have a really awesome trip on less than two grand. If you put away about 130 bucks a month, you can save that in a year. If you can't put away 130 bucks a month you are living beyond your means and you need to get rid of your car, get a roommate, cancel your cable etc.

It's about priorities. Do you want to travel or do you want to own a house? Or do you want to have children? Or do you want to have a low-paying creative career? Pick one. You make your own decisions. You have student debt? You have kids? You have credit card debt? Who do you have to blame for that? YOU.

The people I know who do a lot of international travel all make very little money, like 30k or less. They just make travel their priority and don't spend money on other shit. They are constantly saving for the next trip and make it their goal to go at least once a year.

Personally I am self employed and work remotely so I can work while I am on vacation. This means I can travel basically as much as I want. If you want to live a life of travel then you can choose a career path that makes it easier.
