I liked the old picturebook look some of the scenes have, but I honestly dislike how cartoons in the west generally have to look like they were drawn by kids. Even when I was a kid I thought that was condescending as fuck and that's how my unholy descent into anime began, thanks Cartoon Network.

I specially hated Genndy Tartakovsky's style. I gave Powerpuff Girls a chance and liked it, but could never see much of Dexter's lab or Fairly odd Fairyparents(which looks similar but I don't know if it's actually by the same artist). The grown women with the tiny waists and huge circular butts then tiny forks for feet were almost painful to look at. I'm gonna stop myself before I go on a tangent about artstyles.

I'll say though, Steven Universe had some pretty rough looking episodes early on, but since the last Steven bomb most episodes actually look great, imo the best looking cartoon right now, together with Star vs the forces of evil and Gravity Falls.

Fairly Oddparents is Butch Hartman, and yeah, his style is... interesting.

That's ironic - I loved both Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab, but couldn't stand Fairly Odd Parents.

Now see I dislike the character design of Star because I think she looks just sooo cluttered. (And everyone else bitches about simplicity.) But I love that animation on that show, it's so fast and funny.

I agree with you. I think the tradeoff with anime is that there's much more use of stills and those types of animation shortcuts, but for me personally it's a tradeoff I'm willing to make as long as it's not too egregious (and they do have scenes they pour the budget into).
Visually, it's just so much prettier to me.

Actually, an example of simpler animation that I find incredibly beautiful is that studio that did Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells. THAT is both simple, storybook, and gorgeous.

I love that studio too. And ugh I still need to watch Song of the Sea. How have I kept forgetting about it for this long?
