You have a weird taste in art, OP.

show us on this doll where the animation touched you

I don't like it either, but it's not dramatically awful or anything. Way better than Family Guy or Bob's Burgers.

I'm not familiar with this but just from this still I'm actually really liking the crude style of the people on top of that softer background.

Man, defensive responses already above!

I love this show, and overall I think the art is beautiful. But I agree about the noses. I can ignore it, but I also would've rather they made them different. I overall prefer prettier art, but I disagree that this art is hideous, per se. It's a very pretty show.

You, sir or madam, are a Philistine.

The doll-like characters only added to the fairy tale atmosphere of the story.

Its so fluid though... and those backgrounds...

It took me an episode or two to get used to the animation, but after awhile I liked how the two boys were drawn so simply, while all the scenery and many of the other characters were so detailed. It was a cool juxtaposition.

Based on the responses I feel like I should watch this. Is this art, like SU, better in animation?

(Though I liked SU art before I started watching it, myself. This just seems kinda meh to me from the screenshot provided. Though maybe OP chose a bad example on purpose?)

It's surprising to see this secret. I thought this was one of CN's better-animated shows, considering most of the quality of their fare is a nostalgia boner for Newgrounds circa 2003.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get this hating on simplistic animation styles, especially when it allows for the actual animation quality (movement, etc) to be quality. There is more to an animation style than static images?

I liked the old picturebook look some of the scenes have, but I honestly dislike how cartoons in the west generally have to look like they were drawn by kids. Even when I was a kid I thought that was condescending as fuck and that's how my unholy descent into anime began, thanks Cartoon Network.

I specially hated Genndy Tartakovsky's style. I gave Powerpuff Girls a chance and liked it, but could never see much of Dexter's lab or Fairly odd Fairyparents(which looks similar but I don't know if it's actually by the same artist). The grown women with the tiny waists and huge circular butts then tiny forks for feet were almost painful to look at. I'm gonna stop myself before I go on a tangent about artstyles.

I'll say though, Steven Universe had some pretty rough looking episodes early on, but since the last Steven bomb most episodes actually look great, imo the best looking cartoon right now, together with Star vs the forces of evil and Gravity Falls.

Yeah I do think the two boys, Greg especially have unappealing designs but everything else in the show made up for it. Beautiful animation, story, atmosphere, music and characters made up for kinda weird character design. I feel the same about Steven Universe. I don't like a lot of the character designs, (Sadie, Lars, Steven, Amethyst and Lapis to be specific,) but the story, music, characters and atmosphere makes up for it in my book.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a reason the characters have to look realistic?

I mean I love that they're broken down to simple shapes. It's charming.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Then what do you think about Uncle Grandpa? Almost all SU fans hates that show!

Interesting. If anything, I just think this show is pretty. Not interesting or engaging, but pretty.

/shrug

I don't mind it. It's hardly the first show I've liked that had odd noses in it.

It's rare for the art to be subjectively bad enough I can't stand to watch a series. The only one that springs to mind at the moment is Reign: The Conqueror.

It's okay if a design choice drives you nuts, OP.

There's a show I love called Cybersix and I hate the way short hair/stubble is drawn. The rest of the show is lovely but I wince every time I see arm/chest hair.

It looks cute. I find myself more averse to shows like Rick and Morty as far as art style. SU is fine as far as art, but I was both turned off by the fandom as well as having hoped that the blue ballerina was actually a man.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
The character designs kinda make me think of Tove Jansson's art from the Moomin books, so I really like it.
