I'm also a straight woman, and I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. I like reading things about women that I'm able to find relatable. (That said, it can be difficult sometimes). I do feel like fanfic allows writers to flesh out female characters more. I find slash smut...alienating and voyeuristic, I guess? It has no appeal to me. Also, I have a hard time finding gay men sexually attractive since I feel weird about imagining them in a sexual context since it's unrelatable to me.

When I read het smut, it's less about me self-inserting as the female character and more about me finding the fact that the man enjoys pleasuring the woman attractive. The fact that he enjoys giving women pleasure turns me on.
