Why do women feel the need to appropriate male franchises? Can't they just make a new spy franchise starring a woman?

Separate but equal? I think you used "appropriate" wrong.

"take (something) for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission"

Seems right to me.

Don't be obtuse. In fandom circles, invoking appropriation of identity has a different moral spin on it.

And if we do take that definition you cited, nothing's being "taken" unless you're of the very special mindset that thinks, say, a woman getting a job in a male-dominated field is "stealing" from a man. Or that only women would want to watch a female Bond, and men would all cry angry hurt baby tears of profound loss, because women and men are different species and women don't ever like a male Bond either. As for "owner's permission", lolwut. If this hypothetical thing happened because hypothetical, it would be because of TPTB.

The only people who want a female James Bond are people who want it for social justice reasons.

Most normal people would be happy with an original female character.

I must not be "normal" or a social justice reason warrior because I would legit like James Bond and the Doctor to try female regenerations for once. I don't seem to be alone either, but sure, have fun with your ab/normal straw people.

I'm up there arguing about why it would do a disservice to both... And I agree with you on the doctor. No reason at all for the doctor to be male every single time. Or white. Or even human shaped TBH.
