Apologies of double-posted, comment seems to have got eaten.

Mine is a small, sad one compared to everyone else's. But the friend for whom I've beta-read for years, and who's beta-read for me, has started talking about what her “first readers” think of her original novel. No offer to send the thing to me to read, even though I commented on umpteen chapters of the thing and gave admittedly honest feedback which is what she always asks for and which she acted on. I've asked, in as low-key a way as possible, if I'm no longer a beta-reader for her, and made it clear there'll be no repercussions if so. Radio silence. We were such good mates, too. :(

The radio silence is because you put your friend in an awkward position. Asking her if you were no longer her beta reader was a bit passive aggressive at best. You knew you weren't, which is why you asked. What you should've done was let her know that hey, you'd be happy to beta read her original fic if she's interested, and then LEAVE IT AT THAT. No "I promise not to be maaaaaaaad" comments or subtle pressure on your part. You leave the door open, and give her the choice of entering... or not.

OK, thanks. I'm socially clunky at best... will keep a low profile with her from now on. Still making private sadfaces but that's life.
