I feel you, anon. I remember it used to be really frowned upon for people to ask for money for their fanworks. Trades happened all the time, but you weren't supposed to ask for money. I'm not angry about it or anything (and I might be hypocritical since I support LittleKuriboh's and TeamFourStar's Patreons), but it feels a little strange and it makes me wonder what's okay and what isn't. I read a novel a while ago that had a girl write fanfic for her creative writing class and she got an F because her professor said it was plagiarism, but the girl was pretty pissed because the scenarios were hers, even if the characters weren't. I write fanfic, but I agreed with the professor, but many of my fandom friends thought the girl was right.

My friend and I both wrote fanfic for writing class and got As. Oop. (Though I don't agree with profiting from it. Not that I don't think writers should get paid, but it's a legal grey area when using others' intellectual property and I'd rather not get sued. I don't really agree with fanartists getting paid for producing fanwork but I understand why they charge.)
