Upper middle class with lots of disposable income.

So a lot of lawyers who work for successful firms would count, for example. Many doctors. Executives. People who aren't billionaires but also don't have to worry about money ever unless they're really, really stupid about it. People with a lot of real assets.

A good example: have you ever watched Modern Family? It's a great show and I'm not knocking it. But they are all living in multimillion dollar homes. Nobody I know well could afford a home like that, and very few of them have parents who could. I'm an academic hopefully headed for a solid middle class job with mostly middle class friends and family--I do not have an impoverished background by any means. And we're better off than MANY people. And yet a lot of media is about people way, waaaay beyond its viewers' means.

So part of the issue is that mass media really pushes the boundaries of what is normal for a lot of Americans. They aren't portrayed as rich... except they really obviously are.

Agreed overall, but a huge "THIS" to your last comment.

^^^^^ YES.

And I almost wonder if this skews spending habits for some people.

Like they expect to be living this high life, and spend accordingly.

I would be very surprised if TV sets weren't designed like that on purpose.

Wealth is disguised as, and consequentially perceived as "average" most of the time in trickle-up economies like the US and my country.
