Rich people

Thread above is making me curious.

What do you all consider rich? How much money does someone need to have before they count as rich to you?

The rational part of me says it's anyone who can have a medical emergency and not be completely ruined financially by it.

The bitter part of me says anyone who has five more dollars than I do. I try not to let that part dictate my thinking, but it's hard sometimes.

Re: Rich people

Haha, I know rich people who would say the same thing about anyone having 5 dollars more than them are "rich" and they're middle class!! To be rich you have to have 5 million, not only 4!!

On the other hand I know people who I would say are upper-middle who could take a medical emergency and not be 100% ruined.

But, "surprise medical expenses are not at all a financial worry" is definitely rich.

- if they went to boarding school
- if their parents tell stories about that time they had a party and ruined everything and blew SO MUCH MONEY that we were wiring them more at 1 am and we were so angry and they are going to france next weekend
- if they pay someone to clean their house
- if they own more vehicles than there are people who can drive
- if I say something like "we're sharing cars right now because his broke down" and they say "why don't you buy a new one?"
- if having a job is optional well into their 20s

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
that said, I know that I would be considered rich by many people in the world. I am lucky.

Welp. We've got the two daily drivers for me and the husband (one of which he basically restored with his bare hands and the other of which we bought used), the one we're saving for the kid when he gets old enough, the race car, the RV, and the 1952 Willys Wagon we use for jeeping and hauling things with.

Guess we're rich. The more you know...

Upper middle class with lots of disposable income.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-10-21 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
So a lot of lawyers who work for successful firms would count, for example. Many doctors. Executives. People who aren't billionaires but also don't have to worry about money ever unless they're really, really stupid about it. People with a lot of real assets.

A good example: have you ever watched Modern Family? It's a great show and I'm not knocking it. But they are all living in multimillion dollar homes. Nobody I know well could afford a home like that, and very few of them have parents who could. I'm an academic hopefully headed for a solid middle class job with mostly middle class friends and family--I do not have an impoverished background by any means. And we're better off than MANY people. And yet a lot of media is about people way, waaaay beyond its viewers' means.

So part of the issue is that mass media really pushes the boundaries of what is normal for a lot of Americans. They aren't portrayed as rich... except they really obviously are.

Agreed overall, but a huge "THIS" to your last comment.

Wealth is disguised as, and consequentially perceived as "average" most of the time in trickle-up economies like the US and my country.

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think someone is rich if they have enough money to spend that they hardly ever check a bill. Also when they don't have to worry about finances at all.

Honestly being rich to me is more an attitude thing, I guess? The wealthiest friend I have is going to inherit a multi-million fortune (in my currency), which adds up to around a million dollars. That's after splitting her father's estate between seven siblings and his wife. You could never tell by looking at her though. What does give it away is that she has a very blasé attitude when it comes to money, which is what really tells me that she has grown up a lot wealthier than my other friends

My sister used to wait tables in a wealthy part of town. The few times she got a car fine she'd just put it on the windscreen of a ritzy car. Never heard anything back about it, and it's assumed the rich people just paid it without bothering to check it.

Someone who has a lot of disposable income, who can buy an appartment sans credit.

Someone is rich if they can afford to spend $50-$100 on one item of clothing.

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Regularly. I've spent that amount a few times on clothing. In my life.

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's like, the normal price of clothes where I am, you rarely find much for any cheaper than that. Guess I'm rich.

For some people, the definition of rich = "makes more than I do". No matter how good it gets for you, the sliding scale means that you're not quite rich yet, someone else is richer. And there's always someone richer.

And, to be honest, it's all pretty relative. In wealthier countries, those who consider themselves poor might be considered rich by people from other countries.

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
multimillionaires and billionaires.

people with so much money that they're completely out of touch with reality. especially people who are born into the wealth and inherit the money a family member made and therefore never have to work a day in their lives. they rarely have any idea what the real world is like and have little empathy for the average person who has to work for what they have.

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh, a lot of the answers you get on questions like this are for specific examples. But I don't think being able to buy a designer handbag makes you necessarily rich, because I've known people with hardly any income to spare who prioritize getting a designer handbag and cut corners everywhere else.

Incomes are also dependent. I grew up in a big house and my parents were well-off... for a small town, rural area. Furthermore, here where I am, it's normal for families to have "summer homes" - that is, lake houses (I'm in Minnesota, it's a common thing here). We don't have one, but then, my parents put the money into a nicer permanent home. And since that is just so normal here to have a lake house, it's not a good indicator of wealth.

I mean, I guess if you're a millionaire (in USD) you're probably rich wherever you go. But the details I think depend on the community you're in, and what's normal there.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm I guess to have enough money on the side to constantly buy frivolous things? Housekeepers? Clothes that are brand name and always fit?

And like, more money than someone who is just "well off/managing"

There's not an exact amount in my head cause well size of family and number of kids and schools etc can really alter a status...

Re: Rich people

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say at least ten million, but I live in an expensive area so one million would only just barely buy you a very small house here...

If you're able to swim in a pool made of gold coins, then I'd say you're filthy rich.

I would say anyone who has enough money to spend it on expensive things they want without worrying about the later consequences is filthy rich.

The universal answer is "Making £1 more than I do"

Seriously, everyone who's into financial shaming seems to have the same definition of "I'm not rich, because /this/ person can afford more than I can and that is not ok."

anyone who earns £20k+ a year individually, but that's only because the joint wage for my entire household has never been more than £12k a year. I'm sure a lot of people would still count my idea of "rich" as poor though. I'm cool with it.
