He looks like a vampire here.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He always does lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a fairy, not a vampire.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically a baobhan sith, but male?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, this last episode seemed to put him on more of an upward spiral, if not just because he's doing something nice for Andy.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That involves him sneaking into Andy's room at night. I predict stupid drama.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
this

(Anonymous) 2015-10-22 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
A very safe prediction, given how the series has gone so far.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone else reminded of Freddie Mercury?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The upper lip protrusion, yeah.

Urg downton abbey should have ended in season 3. Why am I still watching it?

But on the subject at hand. I think that the shows problem is that it wants to deal with problems of the times so it just bends the characters to do it. So we want to deal with the shitty job market so Thomas has to apply for jobs. Why would he do that? Idk everyone could be dicks for no reason.

Let me tell you what pisses me off about Thomas/the way he is written:
Any single bit of character development he gains gets retconned. Almost no exceptions. Sometimes the reset is between seasons, sometimes it's mid-season between a few episodes. It's so damn frustrating to watch.

I agree about Carson. He is pretty much an asshole about Thomas atm, and while I can understand why (because as you said, Thomas acts like a piece of shit a lot), the way Carson behaves is extremely petty.

I don't agree about Robert because he only knows what Carson tells him (that Thomas is looking for another job on his own). So it's basically the same tired old trope that generates most of the conflict on this show: drama through misunderstanding and miscommunication (damn annoying if you ask me).

I also have no hope that Thomas' character and situation will be somehow improved - the last season is about half over and nothing happened so far.

A lot about Downton Abbey is wasted potential, but Thomas is an especially bad case.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that is very true. The thing is every season since season 3 has been written like it's the last season. So they keep on making sure everyone and everything is happy and settled and then they have to write a new season.

I still think one of the main reasons for this was Matthew's untimely demise. I think it really showed in the writing that the actor dropping the role was not planned at all, so they got kind of lost with their planned plots that didn't work anymore with the character gone.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This, at least, is the actual last series.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree with you. It made it hard for me to like him as a character because whenever he behaved sympathetically and seemed to be turning over a new leaf, he would do something really bad, and it just came off as him not learning from his mistakes.
fishnchips: (Eh)

[personal profile] fishnchips 2015-10-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one of the things that frustrate me the most about him: the way he is incapable of learning from his mistakes is downright infuriating.

I get that he is written as "thinks he's smarter than he really is" on purpose, but even so, any person with at least a tiny bit of common sense would manage to not make the same mistakes/have their schemes backfire in their face over and over and over again!

He is a gay man living in Service between World Wars. How do you really expect him to be treated? The old vanguard isn't going to accept him and he is too old, poor and far away to find any bohemians who might of counted him as one of their own. He also likes to exploit any advantage he can get on a member of staff. I read somewhere and agree with it that his best happy ending would be to find a nice lesbian, get married, have the children he desires so much and live in friendship while they discretely see their preferred partners.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly that would be fine. If the show was in any way realistic with this. But there are two convicted felons working downstairs. But the main problem is really that most of those things he has done were years ago. When he didn't get any shit for them. So why would it suddenly be that much of a problem?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-22 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think him being gay has much to do with the way he is treated; it seems more to do with the way he treats others. In fact, I'd say that considering the time period and his preferences, he is surprisingly well accepted.

I agree. I mean, even before the whole "reported to the police" thing, it was a very, very open secret (so much so that they joked about it from season 1 forward and basically went "Huh, why the drama, we all knew about him, didn't we?". Even Carson probably wouldn't have such a problem accepting him if he wasn't a complete dick to almost everyone a lot of the time.

HOMG. I forgot it had started.
*has a little fannish attack*

I, too, love Thomas, and hope his story ends on a good note.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-22 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
he's my favorite tbh. He's not the stereotype of a gay guy, yes he can be mean and an ass but imagine what it meant being gay at the time.
He's unhappy and the way he acts sometimes comes from a place of unhappiness and anger and the lack of love in his life and the sense of being hopeless in a world where you don't exist.
Just, for once it's not a character with just daddy issues or other problems cis white guys have in the mainstream used to justify their actions. You don't justify his actions but he's layered and in context you can feel bad for him.
