any professional editors or proofreaders here?

I'm looking to get into the field and I have some questions!

Mostly I'm wondering if it's even possible for non-English majors. I have a degree in a foreign language and experience translating, proofreading and editing translations from that language into English. But I'm wondering if that would be enough when the source language is already English. (I'm not particularly picky about what I'd be editing, but the majority of my experience is magazine articles, if that helps.)

To be honest, I'm a former English major and haven't been able to find editing jobs.

It's possible, but it's not easy. There's not a lot of growth in the field, and the bulk of it's in the (pretty competitive and horribly undervalued) freelance market. If you have contacts into the field, it will make it much easier to make the jump. Publishing is an incestuous clusterfuck of a professional pool on nearly every level.

I think editing is one of those things where it's not so much your qualifications that get you in as it is experience. It's that scenario where a job requires experience, but you can't get experience because nobody will give you a damn job. With editing, supply outweighs demand. I don't think having a degree in English is a leg up at all.
