I'd heard the last book is disappointing. I haven't made up my mind whether to read it or just pretend it doesn't exist.

I'm going for the "pretend that it doesn't exist" route. I hated Raising Steam and I can't really see this one being an improvement.

I usually opt for reading it and then proceeding to pretend it doesn't exist. I think Pterry was brave for continuing to write through his illness and I want to respect that by reading them, but they just don't do his canon justice.

You can accept it as his final opus and be receptive to the sentiments and struggles behind it without liking it as a story. I often enjoy what is technically bad (or not so great, anyway) media because of what I know about the creators' relationship with them.

I've never really thought Pratchett was technically amazing as a writer, on that note. But his books radiated kindness and acceptance and he sounded like an awesome human being.

I don't think Pratchett would want you to sing the book's praises just because it was his last. For me, aside from Geoffrey's lack of characterization, the climax was a pretty big let-down. He built the elves up as a big threat, but their attack seemed to collapse in seconds. It never felt like anyone was in real danger- that's a problem I had with Raising Steam too. The books aren't awful by any means, but... meh.
