Do you really have to be that hurtful?

I'm tired and can't tell if this was meant as a joke?

Anyway, I don't think I sounded hurtful. I wasn't even judging the secret-maker, just expressing how squicked out I am by the thought of this pairing. I mean, this IS a fandom secret for a reason.

DA

But it's so sweet, and Moomin/Snorkmaiden is completely overt - Moomin having some subtle romantic inclinations towards Snufkin is practically textual, not even subtext. Porn is a different matter, and I can see how some fans might find it upsetting. But there's something so special about their friendship. Moomin is desperate to keep Snufkin to himself. Snufkin shoos the little dragon away so that Moomin's feelings won't be hurt. God, they're lovely.

As someone who was recently introduced to Moomin, anything I should look out to read?

Background: I went to Finland, Estonia, and Sweden this summer (I'm from the US, Moomin is practically nonexistent here) and literally ran in to Little My and Moomin on a cruise ship. We also saw Moomin stuff EVERYWHERE and found an adorable children's store with cute stuffed animals in Helsinki.

What would you say are some of the best parts of Moomin? I found one of the children's books in English at my library but didn't know if I should look for more or where to start.

This is my personal favourite: http://www.amazon.com/Comet-Moominland-Tove-Jansson/dp/0141328614/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1445644108&sr=8-14&keywords=Moomin+Trolls

It's about a comet falling upon the Moominvalley. Features the Moomins trying to save a gigantic epic cake from the Apocalypse.

This comes a close second: http://www.amazon.com/Finn-Family-Moomintroll-Moomins-Jansson/dp/0312608896/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445644108&sr=8-1&keywords=Moomin+Trolls

There's the Groke, aka the most terrifying character from a children's book ever, and a sad guy from space who travels on a flying panther. I suspect that this book might've introduced me to hurt/comfort. It's weird.

Welcome to the club! And hey, Estonia's my native country, I hope you enjoyed the trip ^_^

Thanks for the recs, I'll check them out!

I only spent about 12 hours in Estona, sadly, but it was a FABULOUS trip and honestly, I'd do the trip again. I was on a tour and it was perfect. Part of that was the people, but it was a great itinerary. We started out in Tallinn, then Helsinki, Stockholm, Riga, and Vilnius. I had layovers in Oslo and Copenhagen that I added on my own. Our tour guide was from Estonia and she was so awesome.

I'd go back in heartbeat. I'm still on a hunt for Harry Potter in Estonian, I didn't find it when I was there (I looked only briefly).

OMG the Groke!

The episode of the cartoon where she first appears is so creepy. I think it scarred one of my cousins for life as he is still somewhat scared that the Groke lurks in the dark of the forest when we're at our family cabin.

OP
I'd say that all the books are worth reading (except for maybe the Moomins and the Great Flood since the characters haven't really developed into the Moomins they later became yet). I personally enjoy the collections of short stories a lot, like Tales from Moominvalley (seriously, one of those short stories gave me so much understanding of how my own fears and world view works that it was almost ridiculous, and it's helped me grow as a person and become braver).

Dreemyweird suggested Comet in Moominland, and I agree that that's a good place to start. It's the first actual Moomin book, and the story where Moomin first meets a couple of important characters, like Snufkin and Snork Maiden.

Wikipedia has a list of books in order: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomin#List_of_books

The last two books are a lot darker, so you might want to think twice before reading them.

If you like cartoons, the 1990 anime is a happy and fun series. Of the versions I've watched (Swedish, Japanese and English), I'd say English is the version I liked the least, so you might want to try to find the subbed Japanese version. I've found subs up to episode 24.

Aww, yes, the cartoons! I really loved those! Definitely recommended! I remember being afraid of little My as a kid.

I can understand the fear of little My. Her angry eyes and eyebrows and smiling mouth is a strange mix.

Sorry...
