For someone in a financially low state buying new uniforms can be a bit of a problem. I know Mum had to go to specialist shops to get the fabric for my school uniforms, and we were not in all that good a financial state through my latter childhood and teens.

While a pair of drill shorts worked fine for my brothers, I had specialised tartans for my primary school dresses and highschool skirts. Mum also made my white shirts herself, because I was really putting on the weight by my teens. I don't know about the shirts my brothers wore, they were probably something off-the-rack as well.

Most uniforms in the US are just khakis and a t-shirt/polo. You can generally get both for around $20 at Old Navy.
