I think it's fine if it's in appropriate doses, and if it's done well. That example you give sounds good, since you believe Dream Guy does not get in the way.

Some people take a "X Is Never Good" stance about a trope when the fact is almost everything can be done well in writing, if you know how to not make it overbearing.
