Pretty sure the people who were terrified of this when they saw it must have been sub five years old. I was scared of the wolf from Peter And The Wolf (Disney version) when I was 3 years old, but this movie did not scare me at all.

Some people get scared easily, or just don't like tension at all (even if they're not scared, per se).

Hey, different kids are scared of different things. I couldn't even bear to look at a picture of E.T. for an embarrassingly long time.

You would not be the only person I have known who was scared of E.T. as a kid, but like I said, those kids were usually 5 or younger.

Maybe some kids have that fear response persist for longer though, I have no idea.

Straight up. I loved Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Return to Oz, all the Don Bluth movies - "creepy" kid stuff - but the heartwarming tale of a boy and his alien? Literally nightmare-inducing. Damned bug-eyed screeching space scrotum, with his stretchy neck and weird waddle, and his organs all visible and shit. I still get the heebies.

To be honest, I was actually less likely to find things scary as a kid. So many infamous horror movies that apparently went right over my head...

lol well, sexy horror isn't scary until you start finding things sexy, I wager.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It had nothing to do with sex, though? Jump scares, violent deaths, gore, being sucked into a void, etc.

These things weren't scary to me as a kid - I'm more likely to be disturbed by them now.

I think I was about 7 when I saw this, and it scared me shitless, but I was scared of everything. There were Disney movies I had to leave the room during, and at school my mum had to write a letter so I could leave when we watched Goosebumps as a 'special treat'.

And now I love horror movies. Weird.

You know... I think you might be on to something. I was really terrified of "scary" things as a little kid, now I love horror movies as well. I can never seem to recapture that feeling, though.
