Awkward internet misunderstandings

Thank you, lack of tone (and often context)!

What are some of yours?

- I thought someone was a troll and made fun of their username while telling them to GTFO. It turned out the "spam" was actually legitimate, and they weren't a troll at all, they just hadn't worded their post very well. I was so mean about it, though, and they even changed their name, which made me feel even more bad about it. :/

- I almost insulted a BNF at a forum until I realized she was a member of it. We're LJ friends now. (That was a misunderstanding within a misunderstanding - she was part of a fandom posse known for being sanctimonious, and I didn't realize she was more genuine than it seemed.)

When I first got into fandom, I went to forums where people tended to enforce proper spelling, grammar, etc. on their forums. Netspeak was certainly prohibited, and the only people who used it were kids being silly and trolls being silly. LJ was the same. When the rest of the world discovered the internet and came and all these 30 year olds I knew were using netspeak, I pretty much assumed they were either trying to type like their kids to be "cool", or being silly. I was really snarky at first because I just could not take them seriously.

Eventually I decided that didn't do much good, but it was still only two years ago or so that I realized people actually are being 100% serious (and not trying to be cool, either) when they type "what r u doing 2nite?"

Were you perhaps an MBTV/TWoP person?

No, I discovered those places much later, but the forums I went to were definitely stricter like TWOP.

Oh boy.

So I played this game where alternate accounts were referred to as "mules", presumably because they carried excess inventory or something. I was also a member of this forum, completely unrelated to the game, where there was this person who...I guess she wasn't staff but she acted like it? So I PMed her asking who she was, and she said oh, she's just a forum helper, and I was like "haha oh okay, I thought you were a mule used by the admins or something."

Yeah. She assumed I meant she was some sort of sex slave, and never responded when I tried to clarify/apologize. This was well over ten years ago, so I don't feel like crawling into a hole when I think about it, but...wow.

TBH that's quite the leap there, so while I understand feeling bad, I think most of it was on her. She was the one who should've been most embarrassed. O_o (And maybe that's why she didn't respond to the PM?)

I mean, I would have been confused too, but I think I would've just figured you meant a moderator or something.

I've never heard "mule" used as a term for sex slave, only for drug carriers.

That was on her, honestly. "Mule" isn't a common term for sex slave, so it's not your fault she didn't know what you meant and decided to take offense anyway.

I once wrote a post on tumblr about how I thought RPS (real person slash) was weird and creepy, and this girl reblogged it from me and wrote like a 5 paragraph essay about her right to roleplay anime characters online lol. She must have thought I meant "rping" haha.

...In and of itself, not too much.

The behaviour that gets associated with it though... bit o' the creeps.

This!

there's a secret about not talking to celebs about fandom, and I agree with this sentiment.

I sent someone a joke on tumblr (a leave Britney alone reference) and they thought it was someone sending hate (it's a fandom that has vicious wars so far enough) and she got really angry and later locked her twitter and didn't go on tumblr for a few days. It may not even have had anything to do with what I said, but I felt mega guilty because it was someone I really liked.

Aka why I probably will never stop going off anon ever again
