Re: Awkward internet misunderstandings

When I first got into fandom, I went to forums where people tended to enforce proper spelling, grammar, etc. on their forums. Netspeak was certainly prohibited, and the only people who used it were kids being silly and trolls being silly. LJ was the same. When the rest of the world discovered the internet and came and all these 30 year olds I knew were using netspeak, I pretty much assumed they were either trying to type like their kids to be "cool", or being silly. I was really snarky at first because I just could not take them seriously.

Eventually I decided that didn't do much good, but it was still only two years ago or so that I realized people actually are being 100% serious (and not trying to be cool, either) when they type "what r u doing 2nite?"

Were you perhaps an MBTV/TWoP person?

No, I discovered those places much later, but the forums I went to were definitely stricter like TWOP.
