Visual novel recs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda want to get into this genre/medium but I don't really know where to start. What are some good visual novels that are available in English? I'm mainly looking for ones with female protagonists and m/f romance, but I'll take any recs. Fanservice is fine but I'll appreciate it more if it's aimed at straight female players haha

I don't know all that much about visual novels, but maybe start here? There's a lot of tags you can use to narrow down what you want out of a visual novel and you can check out rankings.

Katawa Shoujo is available in English and it's free. It's the first visual novel I played and it's pretty good. It's m/f. There are sex scenes in it but there is an option to play without them.

Steins;Gate is heavy on SF/time travel, and technically the romance is M/F, but it's a fantastic story and absolutely worth playing through the various branches. Cinders, available on Steam, is a non-Japanese VN that's pretty well-written - interesting retelling of Cinderella with elements of political intrigue and all. The Blind Griffin is otome (the genre you're after, seemingly - female protagonist and a range of male love interests) and more importantly, name your own price.

But my top rec for an otome game would have to be Hatoful Boyfriend. Yes, the one with the birds. Its story is amazingly deep and I think there's some female fanservice thrown in with certain settings... also, birds.

Some native English recs (except for Hatoful Boyfriend):

Free: April Was A Fool (http://awaf.dragonflydev.com/), RE: Alastair (http://www.sakevisual.com/realistair/), and Aloners (http://www.sonnet009.com/aloners.html) (AWAF has a more fleshed-out paid version in the works, and R:A apparently has a paid sequel). All have female protagonists and potential for f/m romance.

AWAF is fantasy-based, with more Western character designs, and flips pretty well from comedy to drama -- you're a tavern server hired by a band of heroes after a loss in their ranks, but get more involved than anyone initially intended. Mechanics are pretty straightforward, and you can tell whose path you're on quickly.

R:A is set in high school; your character gets an item stolen from her in an online RPG, but the thief promises to give it back if she can figure out who he is irl. A bit more stat-juggling in this one to get all possible endings.

Aloners is set in a post-apocalypse wasteland, except you don't remember it being that way, the last time you woke up. More thriller/horror elements, but also focused on your growing relationship with the initially wary young man who finds you. Written with the idea of having the protagonist's personality (and, in turn, others' reactions) be strongly shaped by how the player responds, as opposed to having a pre-set or "blank slate" character.

Paid: Seconding Hatoful Boyfriend. Definitely goofing on the whole dating sim genre (I've wondered if it's better to be familiar with dating sims or not when first playing), but some paths are surprisingly dark/dramatic.

Magical Diary (http://www.hanakogames.com/magical_diary.shtml): You're sent to a secret wizard school, sorted into a dorm for adventurous students, with a cranky professor who loves to hand out demerits... and the default name for your character is "Mary Sue". Less of an overarching story than most other visual novels, but relationship story arcs often quite in-depth, plus there's a couple interesting wrinkles to gameplay.

Finally, heard good things about Long Live the Queen (http://www.hanakogames.com/llq.shtml). It's pure stat management afaik, and strongly focused on surviving royal intrigue rather than romance (one review calls it a "Sansa Stark simulator"), but how crazy and convoluted your character's deaths can get seems to be part of its fun.

For the paid ones, it's worth checking if they're ever on sale on Steam or similar, too.
