While I haven't been to any of those subreddits, I too wish reddit had a better reputation, because other fandom subreddits I have been to has been for the most part great.

And it is so much easier to have a discussion there compared to Tumblr. (Despite the fact that some communities have a very bad downvoting culture, as in they downvote everything they disagree with)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Noooooope. Sorry. I am not going to reddit, ever. As far as I'm concerned, from my experience, it's the natural home of all the kinds of nerds that I have gone to great lengths to separate my fandom existence from. Not because everyone there is necessarily a misogynist or a dickhead or morally bad - but my strong experience has been that they tend to be hacky, unoriginal, with annoying and dull opinions that I don't want to deal with.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you don't use tumblr. Because you get the same hacky, unoriginal shit there as well.

With added whining about how JKR is RUINING THEIR CHILDHOOD BY CONTINUING TO CARE ABOUT HER CREATIONS!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really, no.

But I would also argue that perhaps the different structures of Reddit and Tumblr are an advantage in this instance - because I suspect if I did use tumblr, it would be a lot easier to prune the set of people that I interact with so as to stay away from that dumb shit. Whereas, when you have a community that's founded on it, that's a lot harder.

But again. I don't really use tumblr.

I use both tumblr and reddit, and while reddit's reputation isn't undeserved, it's not that hard to navigate the site so that you don't deal with that crap. I use tumblr in much the same way.

A point of interest . . .

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-10-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Reddit has very few content rules and tries to promote free speech, and people say that's why it's full of assholes. Dreamwidth has even fewer content rules. Why don't we get all the racists?

What on Earth makes you think DW has fewer content rules??? Have you never looked at them?

Man, I wish that about Reddit too. I wish assholes didn't ruin it for everyone, because Reddit's commenting system is A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER than Tumblrs and would actually make for really good fandom discussion.

The hate for reddit can only stem from ignorance.

Reddit is no more ruined by assholes than Tumblr is by SJWs. You just avoid the areas where the assholes hang out. Most small communities have no problem with racism/sexism/etc. And if someone does say something, you downvote them.

I mean, looking at the https://www.reddit.com/r/harrypotter shows nothing malicious or bad. It is the same crap you'd see on Tumblr but with a better way to discuss stuff.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who uses both reddit and tumblr on an equal basis...I wouldn't say the backlash reddit gets is entirely not deserving.
I still see various comments promoting racism, sexism, and homophobia highly upvoted.
Just a week or two ago, someone posted a story in an askreddit (one of reddit's most popular subreddits) thread about being mad that a gay girl rejected him, and in turn outed said gay girl to her highly conservative parents, and thus getting her kicked out of her house. It has upvotes in the hundreds and anybody who told the guy that that was kinda shitty, was insanely downvoted.
And if you still won't believe me, just look up all the drama revolving around CT, Ellen Pao, FatPeopleHate, the immaturity of most of the mods and staff, etc.

Reddit is good for some fandom discussions I won't lie, but lol acting like the all the hate reddit gets is "ignorance" is kinda stupid, because there are valid reasons for not liking the site.

This exactly. I never understood how people could say "Reddit sucks" or "I hate reddit". The subs are each so different, you can't compare them. My main sub is /ffxiv, which has next to no trolls/assholes. (The mods are very, very good.)

Most of my subs are troll/asshole-free, which is a big part of why I'm subscribed to them.

Not at all the point, I realize...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
But that is the cutest fanart ever.

Though who is on the what I think is supposed to be a Hippogriff? Is that supposed to be Lily Potter, hence Snape's upward glare? One of the Weasley twins?

I came here to ask the same exact question. I figured her hair looked more brown than red, but I can't think of any other person who that might be with either hair color.

I want to say Sirius, but the hair would be Lupin...but he was never on Buckbeak and they're both dead so...but so is Snape...

It's suppose to be Sirius. :)

i thought FS would love reddit for being anti-PC and ~telling it like it is~

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't spent a lot of time on reddit except to read some AMAs, but I really dislike the look. I don't know why, it just feels cheap and cluttered. It might be shallow, but it's why I can't see myself spending the kind of time I do on LJ or tumblr.

Every subreddit is different, so some subreddits are great and some are terrible. You just have to find the right ones. (Me, I'm fond of the Dragon Age and Hannibal TV subreddits; haven't went to many others recently, but I did check out the Star Wars subreddit after TFA trailer release and the amount of enthusiasm there was fun to watch.)

DON'T YOU KNOW?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Reddit is full of misogynists!
LJ was full of pro-anorexia teenagers!
Tumblr is full of gender-confused idiots!
Facebook is full of racists ranting about Obama and Trudeau being stooges of China!
Patreon is full of creepy porn artists!
Dreamwidth is full of--wait, does Dreamwidth even have a stereotype?

Dreamwidth is full of LJ hasbeens?

What's 4chan then? Gun-toting girlfriend-less MRA nerds?

Facebook is full of pictures of my-child-on-the-potty.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've never gone on reddit, but I suppose I'll check this out, the fic part, because that's all i want...LJ doesn't have to be dead, I'm still on it...with a few others... :(

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! Join! I hope you enjoy yourself. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Reddit IS full of assholes, but there's pockets of decent places. It all depends on the moderators of a given subreddit. If you join, my recommendation is immediately unsub from the defaults, install Reddit Enhancement Suite, and be sure to read the sidebar and stickies of any subreddit you come across before diving into the current posts.
