Job Application Question

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-10-25 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm working on a job application. I have 3 different writing samples I use depending. There is one that is my general go-to because I've gotten compliments on it and it is all my work with very little editing.

However, there is another that fits better for this job. But it was heavily edited and more of a joint thing.

So the first one isn't completely out of the ballpark (the job is more of advocacy and the first sample is from a case, but the advocacy subject is the same as what the case was). But the second sample was written during a policy internship and is pretty spot-on.

Use the second one, it shows you understand aspect s of the job and can write about it and great you have theoretical experience. It's also a relevant example.

And don't down talk yourself about it being a joint writing.

Sa you can use the joint thing, if you just talk about the report or project, as an example of your ability to work with others, accept feedback and take on suggestions.

Eh, just because there's more than one name on it doesn't mean it's not your work. Most of the time people just don't care if you're not the only author so long as you contributed in a major way.

I may not be the best person to ask because this is not my field, but I would go with whichever one you think more closely resembles the kind of output you would be expected to produce for this job.

When I applied for my current job, I submitted a fully edited and formatted report, not just because it was polished and slick, but because I wanted to show that I could generate the kind of end-product needed in my line of work (I'd also written 90% of it and made all the graphics, so I felt it was mostly me even if other people had had their hands on it). I was later asked to submit a piece of unedited writing to show I could still write well, and I did, but I don't think my second example alone would have been a good initial demonstration of why I should get the job.
