Similar in that many of them have had a lot of creators over a long time! I've started to dabble in comics and have seen a bit of the "what is canon" wank so far.

I don't know that I'd take it that far. Nothing wrong with worldbuilding in moderation as long as having a thousand-page "bible" for your fictional universe doesn't get in the way of writing actual stories.
