One cross-fandom announcement you'd like to make

What's something you'd like to say to people in fandom in general?

Dear video gaming fans

This is my announcement:

Characters aren't real people, they do not have a subconscious mind, and as such, they do not have secret motives that explain their OOC behavior. Unless it's explicitly addressed in the text of the show, if a character is behaving OOC, then it's a problem with show's production team (writers, actors, directors, etc.), not some deliberate choice the character made in-text.

So, there's no need to spend hours and hours fighting fellow fans on why Character M did this or that. 99.9999% of the time, it was a behind-the-scenes mistake of some kind. It's not at all unheard of for two consecutive episodes to be written at the same time by different writers, who (by error or by design) do not communicate what they are writing to each other. It's not at all unheard of for writers, who are writing to a strict deadline, to cut some character corners in order to make the main plot of the episode come together.

FOR EXAMPLE (spoilers for late season 4 Battlestar Galactica ahead)....... The Chief. Everything we have ever known about the Chief has taught us that he bleeds his heart and soul into the ship. We see an episode toward the end of season 4 that is All About the Chief and his connection to the ship. And then a few episodes later, he votes to abandon the ship.

If you were on TWOP at the time, you might remember the essays people churned out to explain what secret reasons the Chief could have had for doing this. But there were no secret reasons!! The reason the Chief voted to abandon the ship was because the writers wrote that in the script, because they needed there to be a tie between the Final Five's decision to abandon or stay with the ship, and the big drama of the episode was in which way Tigh was going to vote--with Ellen or against Ellen. The Chief, as a man in-text, didn't factor into this at all--he only mattered out-of-text as a means for the writers to set up the episode's tie for Tigh to break (ugh puns).

But, sure, by all means, spend weeks arguing about why the Chief would abandon his ship like he was a real live boy!

I think people want to stretch that suspension of disbelief out as part of their fannish investment, and death of the author and all, but sometimes it's stretched so thin it just can't be all that much fun, especially when there's wankorama.

tl;dr Watsonian-ism in moderation

It doesn't matter how invested you are in a headcanon: It is not canon. Stop trying to bully people into subscribing to your headcanon. Stop arguing in a discussion about the canon as if your headcanon was real.

Just because you WANT two characters to be in twoo wuv and/or to be knocking boots, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY CANONICAL. And you just look stupid, delusional, and obnoxious when you throw a fit that people disagree. Bonus stupid, delusional, and obnoxious points if you go around calling people who disagree homophobic purely on the basis of that disagreement.

This. But also I'd add that your ship being canon does not make it superior and lording it over fanon shippers is equally obnoxious.

ayrt

Oh totally. But that simply doesn't happen in any of my fandoms, like, ever. Mainly because no one has any time to be aware that there are canon pairings because they are all too busy screaming at each other about how THEIR personally preferred non-canon slash ship is the ONE REAL CANON SHIP and anyone who disagrees or ships something else is STUPID and BLIND and IN DENIAL and PROBABLY HOMOPHOBIC.

Just stop it with the kink shaming. Gordon Bennett. You don't like a fucked up ship? Stop using SJ rhetoric to shame others for liking it/getting off on it. It's fiction, and their fannish preferences don't oppress you. Slap some filters on that shit.

Dear live-action TV fen,

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not the most important fandom. All media fandoms are equally important, even if yours is the most popular and generates the most fanworks.

You are not interchangeable with fandom as a whole. It may amaze you to learn that there are people in fandom who don't give a shit about live-action TV and are more into books or cartoons or video games.

People who are more interested in books/cartoons/video games/etc. than live-action TV are not losers with no lives. They are not socially maladjusted just because they don't get fannish over the same things that you do, nor are they all prententious snobs who look down on you for not getting fannish over the same things they do.

It is okay for people to not be interested in your fandoms. No one absolutely NEEDS to watch SPN or GoT or Breaking Bad or Glee or any of your other favourite shows to truly understand fandom. People who have never seen a single episode of your favourite show, or couldn't get past the first few episodes, or loved it for a few seasons and then gave up on it have just as much of a right to be in fandom as you do.

People who aren't interested in live-action TV, or have different standards than yours, have a right to their opinions just as much as you do. They are not "missing out" because they don't care about TV, or because they experience it differently from how you do.

Sincerely, a bitter nerd.

I will say that television shows (for the most part) airing at the same time, or at least the same evening, for most people in a country means there more of an immediacy to talking about it, thus making it seem more like an "Oh my god, we all need to be talking about this" experience than other fandoms.

That's not to say that's it's better, but it's such a different way of experiencing it from most other types of media.

Re: Dear live-action TV fen,

(Anonymous) 2015-10-25 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not exclusive to TV fandoms, though. The same thing happens with webcomics that have sizeable fandoms. Admittedly, webcomics rarely have readerships that come anywhere near to approaching the size of TV fandoms - the only one that comes to mind is Homestuck. Still, there's that same immediate response that comes after an update, even if it's on a much smaller scale.

May I add that if you're into popular live-action shows and movies but you "side-eye" fans of comics, anime, and video games because for liking "that misogynist trash," you are a hypocrite with no self-awareness.

I wish you guys would quit viewing things with such a jaded eye ffs. Especially when it is actually OOC and makes a character who is decent in canon into some heartless bastard.

Fandom is fandom. It is not of real life importance. People disagreeing with your opinions are not "wrong" are not "horrible" are not "out to get you" and are not looking for a fight. Fandom would be a much better place if everyone would just agree to disagree and realize that things are opinion, not fact.

You don't need a "canon" and treating many franchises as a "canon" is overselling it.

If you're a large fandom, chances are you're not as niche or underground or nerds only that you like to act you are. You're not going to be "judged" for your "fandom" when it's a giant franchise that most of the world has seen.
