Because being Jewish is as much an ethnicity as it is a religion and the two are very intertwined due to roots in ancient Israel, making a clear line between culture, identity and the religion itself difficult.

Considering this is a place where someone once said Jews need to "get over" the Holocaust, I'm pretty sure any wank can be blamed on the use of the J word.

If we're posting seriously, I suppose my point would be that nothing in that as given as necessary. There are plenty of religions that have close ties to ethnicity and culture and identity. The reason - it seems to me - that Judaism functions differently from any other religion in this regard is simply because the Jewish culture made a decision to value that intensely and structured its practice around it and culturally enforced it. And I think that's a really good thing and I wish that a similar system of values and a similar way of thinking about culture and religion existed outside of the specifically Jewish tradition.

I don't know that Judaism is unique, it's just that evangelical Christianity since the great awakening or whatever has made such a big deal out of creedal profession of faith that it tends to dominate American framing of religion.

It's more that Judaism preserved its roots as a "tribal" religion, whereas other religions let it fall by the wayside and went proselytizing route. In today's world, though, as you can see a lot of people struggle with this idea of Judaism as something which is both a religion and an ethnicity. Might be easier for Jews if there were more religions like that, I guess.
