Lots of people take issue with LiS because the actual lesbian ending resulted in one of them having to die.

Personally, I overall think that Max and Chloe's relationship was the best part of the game regardless of player decisions.

Though I can see why some people think the flirtation between them was just fanservice since there is also the option for Max to end up with a guy.

Man, that last part makes me see red. Chloe and Max's relationship, platonic or romantic, is the main focus of the game. The events of the game would not have happened if they didn't care for each other. Max's relationship with Warren, meanwhile, could have been omitted from the game without anything being lost. Even Warren himself isn't strictly necessary to the plot or to Max's characterization. There's no universe where everything Max does for Chloe could be reduced to fanservice just because Max is potentially interested in a guy.

If anything was fanservice, it was the Max/Warren kiss, seeing as all of her journal entries in previous episodes indicated that she saw him as a brother and was worried that she was leading him on.

What I read about the ending, and really the whole game, made it sound like it has the kind of writers who think stories have to have lots of tragedy to be deep. I bet it would have made you kill half of the most compatible couple because of that even if it was a straight couple.
