Anyone in London?

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-10-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to a kickass history conference in London UK from the 29th to the 1st. Is anyone from FS around there or familiar with the area?

I'm looking for stuff to do that might be a little off the beaten path! Any suggestions?

I really liked the Wallace Collection. It's a LOT of Rococo art, but they have "The Swing"! And it is literally off the beaten path, in that I got lost trying to find it.

I have an aunt who lives in London. If I give you her address would you please punch her in the face for me?

haven't been since 2011, but most of the museums in south kensington should be free to enter. Kew's also a good trip.

I lived there for my grad school. If you haven't done all the tourist stuff (that is, the history museums, castles, cathedrals, dungeon tours, etc) I wouldn't look "off the beaten path" - most of the famous stuff is popular for a reason. If you're going to be around Central London, anyway, it's kind of tough to get off the path, so to speak, but there are still awesome pubs, etc. If you have time and have exhausted the main stuff, I'd day trip somewhere, like Bath, or Warwick, or somewhere else.

I second this if you haven't been to London before.

Also try to walk around a lot instead of taking the tube or a cab everywhere. Just walking around the city, looking at it and just taking in the atmosphere is an experience in itself.

I'm familiar with London.
Are you a tea drinker? Yumchaa is pretty delicious. There's one in Soho and another in King's Cross. They have market stalls too. There's also a "secret" tea room in Soho on Greek street. (not so secret now!)

There's an all female Shakespeare company if you like the theatre and want to see something a little different. http://smoothfacedgentlemen.com

I did all the cheesy touristy stuff too.

Why on earth would anyone want to do that?

If you like literary history, go to the Friend at Hand pub. It's where Oscar Wilde wrote his plays.

Also, the Cheshire Cheese is really neat. It's a pub from the 1600s.

I'm not sure what you like to do, but I visited Highgate Cemetery and loved it. It's a beautifully overgrown Victorian cemetery with a lot of statues and mausoleums, and the overgrown trees and vines just add to the ambiance.

If it's something you'd be interested in, you should call ahead to book for a tour - you can definitely only get in to East Highgate by tour (that's the side with the more impressive funerary architecture), and they can get booked up. We just called the day before and reserved a spot.

The West side of Highgate might be free (or relatively cheap, I don't recall). It's a bit less picturesque by Highgate standards, but still quite lovely, and you do get to see the giant head of Karl Marx (one of the uglier tombstones I've seen).

Sir John Soane's Museum is quirky and amazing:

http://www.soane.org/

Admission is free and it feels more like you're exploring the neat old house of an eccentric collector than a museum proper.
