I lived there for my grad school. If you haven't done all the tourist stuff (that is, the history museums, castles, cathedrals, dungeon tours, etc) I wouldn't look "off the beaten path" - most of the famous stuff is popular for a reason. If you're going to be around Central London, anyway, it's kind of tough to get off the path, so to speak, but there are still awesome pubs, etc. If you have time and have exhausted the main stuff, I'd day trip somewhere, like Bath, or Warwick, or somewhere else.

I second this if you haven't been to London before.

Also try to walk around a lot instead of taking the tube or a cab everywhere. Just walking around the city, looking at it and just taking in the atmosphere is an experience in itself.
