Apartment Questions

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be moving to an apartment next month. It's my first time on my own. So, I have some questions.

What furniture do you think is most important? I'm planning on buying the essentials first and picking up the other stuff thorough the year.

Besides furniture, what else is important to buy?

Any tips, advice, etc?

A bed is probs the thing I'd get first. Even if it's a futon. You need something comfortable to sleep on. If you don't have cats (or if you can shoe them out of the bedroom), you can also go with a large air mattress.

Other essentials:

Towels
Sheets
Toilet plunger and sponge mop (TRUST ME ON THIS; your toilet WILL act up at 3AM and that is the most embarrassing trip to Wal-Mart you will ever make)
Indoor garbage can and bags
Dishes/silverware/glasses
At least one pot, frying pan, and mixing bowl
Rudimentary cooking utensils (spatula, whisk, wooden spoon, flipper, etc.)
Laundry basket

a bed is important, or at least a mattress. somewhere to put your clothes so you aren't living out of a suitcase. if your apartment has a closet it's not so necessary to get a big dresser. if you'd actually use one, then a table to eat on. maybe you'd be more likely to eat at the couch instead. probably a stand for your tv if you end up getting a tv.

just think about the things you use every day, often those things are not so obvious even if you use them often. stuff like dishes, utensils, cloths, trash cans, garbage bags, cleaning supplies, i could go on. make a list of what you use the most and buy those things first.

clean often, that way it's only a little bit every time.

as for packing, do it early! no sense stressing out over having lots to pack still right before your move in day.

it's you've got any more questions, just shoot!

Bed, of course, is number one. If you have money to buy furniture, do invest in that mattress and bedframe. Otherwise, you can try to get by with an air mattress for awhile, but you'll likely want a real bed.

A dining table with chairs would be the other big one. For a cheap first table, you could get a card table and folding chairs.

Otherwise, some sort of couch (I recommend a folding futon, so guests could sleep over) and some kind of table/cupboard for your TV. And a desk for your computer (cheap options available at superstores).

I'm assuming, of course, you have appliances? If not, get that fridge first, and a microwave or something if you use that.

If you have a fairly small apartment I would actually consider getting a sofa bed before getting a proper one. That way you have a sofa, something semi-comfortable to sleep on until you get a proper bed, and a place for guests to crash later on. That's what I did for the first month when I moved out, though I was lucky and got a bed as a b-day present after that first month.

Yes! Futons are great! If you can save up the money, spring for a good one. The good-quality types (not the Target/Kmart/Walmart crap, but ones from an actual furniture store or a dedicated futon shop) are extremely comfy and last forever.

A bed. For sleeping and blanket/laundry storage - which ever you prefer.

Some sort of table-like entity which can be used as a table/desk/workbench for eating/working/hobby of your choice and a chair to go with it.

Something to put a TV on, even if you don't have a TV yet. You can put other things on it for now until you get more tables/coffee tables and you'll be ready for when you get a TV.

Other than furniture: plates, cups, eating utensils and glasses. Food measuring cups and mixing bowls and pots and pans if you're planning on any cooking. Towels and washcloths. Dishcloths and towels and soap. Curtains if the apartment doesn't have any.

With furniture, it depends on the size/layout of the place and what you have in the way of built-in storage. My first apartment had a walk of buikt-in shelves, so I needed no bookshelves. I need multiple bookshelves in my current apartment, though. That apartment was an efficiency type and small, so there was room for a bed or couch, but not both. I had a futon, but never folded it up. It still served for both sleeping and sitting, though.

Based on that first apartment, the things I found most important were: thing to sleep on + bedding, small table (for eating anf providing extra counter space in the kitchen, can double as a desk/workspace although my computer back then was a desktop and it had its own dedicated desk), chair for tabe (second chair is preferable so there's space for a guest), basic cooking and eating dishes/utensils, microwave, bedside lamp, bath towels, toilet paper, basic cleaning supplies (for dishes, floor - if there's carpet, you will want a vaccuum, toilet, shower, etc), toilet plunger, trash can & bags, bathmat, clothes hangers.

If needed: shower curtain, thing to put your tv on (could be another piece of furniture doing double duty - i used to use my dresser as tv stand), clothes storage (dresser, garment rack, wardrobe - depends on what's already there in terms f closets and things), shelves, curtains/shades/blinds, coffee maker, toaster, and so on.

In my current apartment, I really appreciate having a bedside table. I used to use part of a shelving unit for that.

You can hold off on a lot of stuff until you move in and start realizing what you really need. But at least figure out where you will sleep and how you will eat.

Living alone, I found the most useful cooking stuff to be a medium-sized frying pan and a small (I think mine is a tiny 1.5 quarts) saucepan, both with lids. The higher quality, the better. I bought and tossed cheap pans for ages because they just didn't last and to this day I won't use non-stick pans because I can't help but recall the cheap coating that was always coming off mine. It doesn't need to be high-end, though. Something in a Cuisinart or Kitchenaid level of quality will last for years. You don't need a whole set. My frying pan didn't come with a lid, but I had saved the glass lid from one of the cheap pans and it fit perfectly. The small saucepan is a problem if you want to make pasta for a group and other large-volume stuff, which is why I eventually got a stock pot, but it's perfect for making 1-4 portions of rice and other small things (go for narrow and tall rather than wide and short).

For plates and things, a small number of microwave-safe ceramic plates, bowls, and mugs is the best place to start. Avoid cheap plastic dishes, even if that means you can only get a small number of things at first.

Shelves. You can make them out of planks and cinderblocks, but you really need some. Also milk crates and bookends.
