RPG Maker

Has anyone used it? I'm feeling creative and downloaded the free trial... but I can't quite figure out how to make anything work properly.

I have used it (and Stencyl). There's a series of tutorial PDFs for RPG Maker somewhere, they should introduce the concepts pretty well.

As it turns out, I have the latest version(?), RPG Maker MV. All the tutorials I've found are from the previous versions. I'm guessing it's the same concepts but without the identical user interface I get really confused...

some of my friends have used it. From what they say, it's a bit of a learning curve until you manage to make things happen properly. Maybe look up some tutorials?

I recommend starting with something small, because partway through it you'll figure out things that would have been really useful to know for a large project. I was a quarter of the way through before I figured out local variables, and three-quarters through before I figured out how to make text take up more than one box. (I wound up trimming every line to fit in one dialogue box. Minimalism is in!)

Also, don't be afraid to ask forumites for help. They don't bite. (Usually.)

You're lucky to make a thousand, unfortunately. RPG Maker has a bad reputation :(

I haven't heard anything bad about it. It seems like a fun way to make games without learning all the difficult stuff. What is the reputation?

Mostly it's the source of a lot of poorly-made games (particularly on some popular older versions) so it's generally viewed as a trash generator.
