OP... I understand where you're coming from, but putting a paedophile character right in the middle of this secret seems like a pretty unfortunate choice. I think you might be in for some wank.

To be fair to OP it is not a cliche heteronormative relationship, which is all they're claiming. They don't say all of them are positive and good relationships, only that they aren't typical and are depicted well.

Abusive ships can be depicted well.

Yeah, I realize they didn't mean to say anything offensive. The combination of the wording and the pictures just struck me as awkward - I do think it wasn't deliberate.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-29 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want more people to watch it, I wouldn't spoiler it in the secret. Ruins it a bit.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-29 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhhh... the whole pedophile/pederast thing. I get what you're saying, but that's not really a positive for me because I couldn't decide whether it was innovative of them (to show a character with those tendencies who hadn't acted upon them) or a cop out.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-10-29 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
But.... pedophiles aren't pederasts by definition.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me? Where did you get that idea from? A paedophile is sexually attracted to children, a pederast is into sexual relations between "a man and a boy" (OED), the latter is almost always what would be under legal age of consent in modern terms. Massive overlap.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Chiming in to say that the concepts vary depending on whose work you read, but according to most articles a pederast would be a person who sexually abuses minors wihout implying they are exclusively attracted to them (they are just as likely to abuse other vulnerable victims). While a pedophile is exclusively attracted to children and is, in essence, usually much more immature and therefore capable of a complex level of denial -- ex. believing he can have a "relationship" with a child, kids are able to consent, etc.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-10-31 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Formal defintions put pederasty as attractions to adolescents/pubescent children and pedophilia as attraction to prepubescent children. There is no overlap.

I'm not gonna touch the pederast angle you're presenting here OP, but the other one just seems like more diversity as a background prop for straight, white protagonists. That's not really innovative, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, though, it's set in the UK where IIRC they're something like 80% white. If you go to the bigger cities, you'd see a more diverse population, but the UK in general is pretty white.

Dorset, which is where Broadchurch is set, is 97.9% white as per the 2011 census. England as a whole is 85.5% white.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
One of these things is not like the other...

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, first pic is straight.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm talking about the middle one.

It doesn't take place outdoors.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
As 8. said: But it's so boring!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
This secret somewhat amuse me considering how outrageously popular this show is in my country. My dentist and I were debating theories and themes, the one time I actually enjoyed the dentist.

Unfortunate implications aside, I do greatly enjoy other two relationships greatly. Especially Alec and Ellie, those two are fantastic and if they ever become romantically involved I will throw something.

I watched the version they did here in the US, and do not remember a lesbian relationship. Am I blanking, or did something get cut for US audiences?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
It was in season 2.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't realize there was a season 2... Okay. Gotta go look for that then. Thanks :)

I have no idea what this is, but the idea of a pedophile being portrayed in a positive way is making me go nope, nope, nope, nope.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't worry. It doesn't portray the paedophile in a good light. At all.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's written by the same person who did Torchwood, also full of not heteronormative relationships, so it's not surprising.

It was also very popular, I'm assuming they will make more.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but I'm still hoping for the detectives to get together in the next season. I did like their work-centered friendship in the first two seasons, but I'd also like for them to not be alone in old age.
