What features do you like or dislike in an art style?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about Steven Universe and how a lot of people dislike the art style. It got me wondering what different people consider makes a style good or bad.

For me, I tend to like the styles between realistic and anime. What really puts me off is when characters are difficult to tell apart. Like, when I'm reading some comics and I can't identify the characters out of uniform.

I really dislike a specific type of anime style that involves super angular characters. E.g. Clamp's Wish. You're not supposed to have a chin so sharp you could stab someone with it.

I dislike Clamp's xxxholic style. The characters are freakishly tall and their limbs look like limp noodles. I agree with the chin thing.

I don't like things that are stiff. Like if something's going for ultra cartoony, it have a lot of exaggeration behind it. SU's and a fair few other modern cartoons style feel lifeless to me. Bring back rubberhose.

I tend to go for things between realism and anime too, but the anime style's gotta have some life foundation behind it. Think more gainax or capcom-esque than fruits basket.

when features are too exagerated. Incredibles and Les Triplettes de Belleville to name a few.

I like more realistic art. I don't like art where I can't figure out what I'm looking at (looking at you Trigun).

hdu Trigun's a classic! Manga or anime?

Manga. I like the character design but fuck me if I could follow the fights. And some of the bad dudes might've been cool but I just couldn't understand their anatomy. They're part machine and I have no idea what's supposed to be sticking out of where.

Reading the manga made me wish they'd had the ending when they were doing the anime so I could visualize what was supposed to be happening. The anime was pretty clear and I could follow what was going on without trouble. But I've looked at some pages of the manga for hours and still have no idea what's going on.

same here! Manga's really confusing and some characters' design is something else.

The problem with Trigun is less the style and more that his panels are so fucking unclear. It's not just you, I never had any idea what's going on there myself.

I love good varying line quality.

I hate when people do shadows or darker areas by just a darker shade of the same color (or god forbid burn and dodge). Use your color wheel people.

I also hate when all faces look the same. You get those artist who are good at one face and never try to do anything different.

Painted-on clothes are one of my biggest pet peeves. It's a stylistic convention in superhero comics, but I've seen it pop up in other genres too. Drives me nuts.

FFS, even skin-tight spandex isn't going to cling to your skin enough that every muscle and curve is perfectly defined. And if it's that tight and your genitals still aren't visible, you probably don't HAVE any genitals.

Well said.

Not every fit person even has lean, defined abdominals, and even if they did, they're not going to show through clothing that much--unless I'm meant to infer that the clothing is so fine and the characters are so soaked in sweat that there's a "wet t-shirt" effect. Ew.

Stuff that's clearly intented to be for adults. There's usually a very thin line art style with rather beady pupils and skinny limbs. Think Rick and Morty.

Agreed on between realistic and anime. I think that Urasawa's art is amazing for that, and I also quite like the look of Gangsta.

For me, I like more detail than what you get in something like SU. Like Peridot's hair - what is it doing? Is it hair? I hate it when I don't understand what I'm supposed to be seeing (unless it's like, Dali, where that's the point).

I also generally don't like perfectly round eyes on human characters, though it doesn't always bother me enough to keep me away.

I figured Peridot's hair is supposed to be an afro. It's kind of similar in shape to Sardonyx's hair, after all.

But she's got those little lines at the sides right near her face, I mean what are those? Those don't look like an afro to me...

Ed Edd and Eddy. The entire style was hideous. The movement, everything. My eyes. My guts still churn in disgust.

Depends on how I feel on that day. I like the designs but the style of SU doesn't particularly appeal to me. But if I had seen it on a day where I was into more stylised I probably would have stuck with it.

If the manga is black and white, I desperately need diversity in face and body types. Other than that, I can live with almost anything.

I guess if there's one thing I like, it's when a show can do an "ugly" character who still fits in the style of the other characters. In the prison show Rainbow, for instance, some of the protagonists would clearly be unattractive in real life, but the softened art style makes them look charming anyway.

The Flash/thick outlines/Butch Hartman style a lot of American cartoons were during the noughties or so (I didn't check for exact years) never grew on me. I'm actually a lot more fond of this new style trend (SU, GF, OTGW etc. Although I'm not super fond of how people's eyes look like in GF).

The one Flash animated series I've seen where I sometimes like the style is MLP:FIM, and even that has stuff I'm not always fond of. Like close-ups tend to use the same models without added detail, and that can look awkward.
