No, your instincts are correct.

In fact, I would go so far as to generalize it and say that even on a personal level Alicorn is cool while Eliezer is pretty terrible and... I don't think he's a morally bad person, so when I call him shitty I want to be clear that I am using it in a way that carries no moral weight, but he strikes me as pretty shitty. And a lot of the community around HPMOR patterns itself more after Eliezer unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate your clarification of shittiness. Because yeah, I feel the same way.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my friends knows him in real life (they work in the same field) and apparently he really is incredibly arrogant and pretty shitty.

I'm terrified by the phrase "Golden Empire."

for fanfic the only Metric of Worth that I think about is "did I like that?"

I know what you mean, at least about the HP one. I didn't know there was a Twilight version. I thought the idea was cool, because it addressed some issues I had had with the HP series. Plus, people kept reccing it, so I gave it a try. But after a few chapters I had to give up. The whole thing oozed smugness and there was little to no fondness for the original. Not something I want to read thousands and thousands of words of.

I forgot I had FS open and switched tabs and this picture was taking up my whole screen - thought I had accidentally opened some old obscure archived geocities website for a second!

Anyway you got further than I did with that fic. Kudos.

I'll admit to not reading either of these, I tried and got bored, but I think the difference in you reaction is based on the sheer gap of quality between Harry Potter and Twilight to begin with. MoR is sort of a different take on the material I believe, while Luminosity is just... I'm going to rewrite Twilight and make it suck less. MoR is basically putting frosting on an already frosted cake.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
MoR was so awful. I can't comprehend its popularity.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
basically: nerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrds

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hey I'm a nerd and I hate MoR because it's unbearably smug and the author is so full of himself it's coming out his ears.

I agree with you on Methods of Rationality.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I gave up a few chapters in, so much smugness, it was just insufferable. I do think the relative qualities of the source material probably play a part, but also one may just be a better story than the other.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
fun fact: The author of Methods of Rationality admitted that he chose the Harry Potter fandom to write his weird manifesto-story hybrid thing specifically because it was so huge, so his ideas (from his website 'Less Wrong') would reach a wider audience.

other fun fact: He only read up to 'Prisoners of Azkaban'.

He also has said that he doesn't get Ron as a character. Seriously.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Eliezer. A. Shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who had a 3D effect and had the red writing pop out? BECAUSE THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!

...er, that is all.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like I'm the only one that found Luminosity incredibly dull and kind of smug (full disclosure: I gave up after about 30K). I can see what the author was trying to do, I think, but imo she either failed, or else she succeeded--if part of what she was aiming for was to tell an insufferably dull story. Twilight is poorly written and problematic, yes, but when I see people claiming Luminosity is the better story I just think, are we reading the same fanfiction? The writing in Luminosity is completely lacking in atmosphere, and Bella's characterization comes off almost impossibly bland, while at the same time being oddly sanctimonious.

I think it's so odd that people can't criticize Twilight!Bella enough for being a Mary Sue (which is pretty fair, since she is one), yet apparently people think Luminosity!Bella is less of a Mary Sue. When to me, she's just a different kind of Mary Sue. Twilight!Bella is the girl a lot of teenage girls wish they were; Luminosity!Bella is the girl a lot of second year Uni students actually are. They can both be insipid and annoying in their own ways, but if I have to choose one, I'm definitely going to pick Twilight!Bella. At least reading 400 pages of her isn't like spending 400 pages in the head of someone who is the person I'd be if I was twice as boring as I currently am.

As for MoR, I haven't read it, so I can't say whether I agree with OP's statement that it's worse than its Twilight counterpart.

Thank you! I totally agree. Luminosity's Bella is annoying, but in a different way.

And it felt like nothing was happening for dozens of paragraphs, combined with Bella's prevailing thoughts being all about herself... yeah, I just couldn't feel anything for her. Luminosity sucked, because it leeched any sense of character out of Bella. Sonny the robot has more of an emotional range than Luminosity!Bella. Hell, even KStew herself has more range!

book-canon!Bella actually has a personality... albeit a horrible, incredibly whiny one.

Honestly, I pretty much thought Luminosity was worse.

Twilight!Bella mostly fucker herself and her own life over, Luminosity!Bella was hugely smug, believed she knew everything better than everyone else, removed their choices and fucked their lives over.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-16 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight!Bella is the girl a lot of teenage girls wish they were

You know, considering how useless, devoid of personality and passive Bella is, this is sort of scary in its own way.

But I agree about Luminosity!Bella.

Disclaimer: I have neither read, nor seen the movies of either Harry Potter or Twilight.

I'll be the voice of dissent here and admit that I liked HPMOR. I haven't read Luminosity, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the rec, anon!
