Eh... if I remember right, though, they didn't kill them because NOT killing them would result in more fuckery, and therefore they had a duty to kill them for the greater good, but just as a revenge tactic for kickstarting the apocalypse. So it's not really justified.

So much yes, OP. Just two days ago I was talking about this with a friend. The biggest threat in the Supernatural universe, and having done the most damage by far, is not some force of evil or another supernatural power, it's those two so-called heroes. People have to be sacrificed for the greater good - except if you are one of the Winchester brothers (well, Sam or Dean, not that other one who hasn't been mentioned in seasons), then the greater good is sacrificed by and for you. Screw humanity, right, better the world than your murderous brother. Seriously, the series finale will have to be all the other players uniting to kill off the Winchesters, and both of them at the same time to prevent a return.

You're saying they have a Gilligan Problem.

Except they were manipulated into the Apocalypse by demons and angels all their lives, so....not really?

Not...really though? In the recent seasons, they would probably be better off dead, I'll give you that. But at that point the apocalypse had already started and they were the only ones who could stop it, so killing them would have left the world fucked.

Except....it's been made clear in canon that Dean and Sam's whole *lives* have been manipulated by demons and angels alike. Their parents were put together by a cupid so they would *have* Dean and Sam, it's been a 'thing' since long before they were born, and they were lied to and tricked and pushed and shoved into things that *both* sides wanted to happen at any cost.

They did the best they could while being pressured by Lucifer, Archangels and God (?) to follow one path, and one path only, so really...they are *not* to blame for all that stuff, and they *did* actually save the world.
