I second Westboro and FotF.

I am always gobsmacked that people with so much hate can consider themselves Christians.

It confuses me, too, yeah. Very much. I hate that these are the sorts of people that some think of when they think of Christians, too, instead of the people who actually do live by Christ's teachings and are decent human beings.

Agreed, but of course it's the same with almost any group: to some, the bad/sensational stuff makes a 'better story' because the sound bites are grabbier.

(I'm actually happy for sites like Upworthy, who have more focus on stories of people acting with civility and compassion.)

This is true.

I'm not familiar with this Upworthy site. I'll have to take a look at it-sounds like it'd be a worthwhile read :). I'm glad that sites like that exist.

I always argue that the only defining trait of being a Christian is believing in the divinity of Jesus Christ. I hate all the different denominations and sects trying to claim that they're the only Real Christians and others aren't really Christian. I have to stand by that here. I hate what Westboro and the like do but if I'm going to call myself a Christian despite openly acknowledging that I pick and choose the parts of the dogma that make sense to me then I'm not throwing stones from that glass house by telling other people that they're not. It would feel like a No True Scotsman argument otherwise. I'd rather acknowledge the problems common to a lot of parts of the religion and work to change it than to just say they're not actually Christians and avoid the uncomfortable conversations about why these things got so common.

For me it's less about theology and more about works.

(I do understand you though. It so often seems that the admonishment "Hate the sin but love the sinner" has turned into "Hate the sinner.")
