zombie apocalypse

do you think an original, non-generic zombie apocalypse story can be done at this point?

if so, how?

Re: zombie apocalypse

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
by combining a completely unrelated genre or very very loosely applying to the definition of zombie-ism

Re: zombie apocalypse

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe by having it happen in different time periods

are there any zombie stories set in the 1920s? 1950s? 1400s?

This is the most original take on it I've seen.

I want a humans vs robots story where the humans zombie themselves up on purpose. Robots live forever, don't have to eat or breathe and don't feel pain, how do you fight that? Zombies can, provided they can retain a bit of intellect. Humanity bands together and figures out a way to zombie themselves on purpose, and you end up with the grimdark story of a small band of undead shock troops who volunteer to go and fight, knowing they're going to rot alive

But the war is getting worse. Humanity realizes that it's not enough to only send one group. They have to send more, so they do. Even civs have to zombie up eventually in order to live as conditions get worse. Unbreathable air, lack of food and water. More and more people opt for the assured slow rot instead of hunger cramps and pain they might feel if they're caught up in bombs and battle. Everyone is slowly mentally deteriorating and getting dull toward mom's arm falling off or dad losing his nose and little susie losing her mind and starting to gnaw on the cat. They'll have to win the war and survive long enough to fix the environment then clone some new humans later to restart the species but people are starting to wonder what the point is of doing so

Hmm this'd be an interesting nanowrimo

I think there was a Doctor Who story with this plotline, just with Cybermen instead of zombies.

Most zombie stories rigidly follow the Romero model: zombies everywhere, society collapses, that's really it. The zombies are either walking, shambling corpses, or running, infected humans, either way the result is the same. Even The Last Of Us, which had a fairly original take, followed the same concept, it just wisely skipped most of the apocalypse-scenario nonsense past the first chapter and went straight to 20 years later. The reason most zombie apocalypse scenarios are generic is because they rarely stray from this theme.

I think it'd be a good idea to mix and match a bit. Combine the standard zombie story with more fantastical horror elements -- Lovecraftian monsters and the like. Change the time period! Something in the past (say, the 1920s -- perfect for the above-mentioned Lovecraft references!) or in the far future. Or make the zombies a smaller threat -- rather than throngs in the thousands, simply make them number only in the hundreds, with other, more dangerous enemies about. Half-Life 2 played with this -- there are headcrab zombies everywhere, but they number maybe in the hundreds in a given region, dotting the landscape as an occasional hazard while bigger threats (the Combine, antlions, etc.) drew more attention.

And for the love of god don't make something like Crossed.

I think you could do it if you got really creative with the zombie types. (I hear I Am a Hero has zombie human centipedes.)

And Apocalypse No Toride has evolving zombies! And also a bee-like zombie structure.

Is there a point in trying? I mean, once you have "zombies" and "apocalypse" you've painted yourself in a little box.

Wait. Maybe a story about an outbreak which is successfully contained by public health agencies and never really becomes a full-blown apocalypse. That would be different.

Maggie

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-10-31 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Just ran across a movie called "Maggie"

"Maggie is a 16-year old girl from a town in middle America who becomes infected by a zombie. It will take six months for her to turn, and the film tracks the transformation as she stays with her family"

Put it on my watch list for tomorrow.
