Thanks. I'm also partial to Merlin's POV, but I really want to explore these, because they're so often cast as either flat-out villains, or at best they're just really awful at being good. I kinda want to flesh out what made them that way.

I especially love the idea of things from the women's point of view. I did not like Mists of Avalon (even before I found out about the author), but the general concept of myths from the point of view of the marginalized is something I'm really interested in.

Yes. I hated Mists of Avalon for so many reasons that had nothing to do with the author being a total fucking horror show of a person. First and foremost being that everyone who is not Morgaine is either brainless, spineless, heartless, or some combination of the three.

Yes, totally that. I didn't find it very pro-woman considering how it elevated one woman at the expense of the others.

Have you read the Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart? I love that one. A bit of sexism still, but one thing I really liked was that Arthur knew about Guenevere's affair and approved. And that Guenevere made her own choices (as did Arthur's mother who knew who Uthur was and loved him and chose to sleep with him).

I haven't read it, but I'll have to check it out. I've always preferred the idea that Arthur knew about the affair and gave it his blessing because he knew she was happier with Lancelot.

Yup. Although, in this case Lancelot doesn't exist because the author was working from earlier sources of the myths that don't have a Lancelot (she says Lancelot was a French addition). The character Gwen has an affair with is Arthur's best friend, whose name I can't recall right now.

But I really love this take on the myths. She starts from Merlin's birth. Arthur only comes in later. I love her version of Merlin, though. And she also has Ygraine in on the Uthur pretending to be her husband bit, which I liked because it takes away the rape element that always makes it hard to root for Merlin.

I agree with your take, but then I never thought readers were supposed to like Morgaine unconditionally. We see things from her POV, but she's clearly a flawed person for all that she believes herself not to be. I guess I kind of liked that complexity.
