WHO's carcinogen announcement

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-10-31 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
What do people think of the World Health organization announcing that, among other things, processed meats and coffee are carcinogenic?

Basically everything causes cancer now. Coffee has been proven good for you in previous studies. I really don't care. We're all gonna die somehow.

I am not so much with the caring, to be honest. My sense is that they are not *strongly* carcinogens, and second, it's not like I thought eating a ton of those things was healthy before

The research has been out there for decades, literally. They have been dragging their feet, if anything.

That said, I doubt it will sway anyone's dietary habits.

My thoughts went something like "In other news, water is wet, the sky is blue, and I'm not wearing any pants." Everything causes cancer at this point, so what else is new at this point.

Life isn't worth it without coffee. Bring it on, cancer.

My mouth is full of bacon as we speak.

Old news/I'm not surprised.

Depending on what country you live in, provided you don't have your own livestock and do the best to keep the herbicide to a minimum, carcinogens aren't the only things in your meat, darling.

And as far as coffee goes, again, the pesticides--is that what it is? Or is there some chemical reagent that causes the body's cells to mutate?

Many things are cancerous. As with most things, moderation is key.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with coffee being roasted. Burning stuff produces carginogens.

pointless scaremongering, because if you actually read the reports and not the headlines, it comes down to (and of course I'm paraphrasing now) eating a hot dog or similar processed meat product every single day for your life will raise your chances of colon cancer from 6% to 7%.

so basically the long-term effect of an unhealthy diet that I'm sure few people actually eat is to raise a risk by a percentage point. It doesn't mean that merely allowing a steak to touch your lips will absolutely give you cancer full stop, and the fucking media needs to stop treating it like the latter scenario.

I guess I kind of assumed it was?

Apparently the WHO likes to err on the side of EVERYTHING CAUSES CANCER and coffee was put on the list a while ago and not taken off, even though it appears the scientific evidence suggests it actually LOWERS the risk or raises the survival rates of some cancers.

In fact, searching "coffee cancer" just gives me articles saying coffee is good for you.

Eating pretty much anything will eventually kill you within a century of so after the harmful effects accumulate. You still die a lot faster if you DON'T eat.

My opinion on it is that anyone who wants to keep consuming those products are now warned should they develop cancer. That is an everyday risk, decide how you wish to deal with it.
