as a gay person who works for Disney I think their biggest obstacle wrt actual gay representation in movies is that it would severely hamper their ability to market their movies overseas. there are many countries that wouldn't even show a Disney movie with gay characters, and they have contracts and licensing deals with the Disney companies of those countries. if you've got say a gay princess movie to market and the censoring boards on half the countries you market to is telling you no, then you're having to in turn tell Disney (Homophobic Country) that they won't be getting your newest multi-million dollar movie and all the merchandise that goes with it, it becomes a significant issue. there are all sorts of contracts and merch deals that get fucked over because a lot of countries wouldn't want anything pro-gay. unfortunately Disney is just such a massively international company that it's incredibly difficult to deal with any "political" or social issue. I'm not saying Disney would do it if not for that, and it certainly doesn't have a reputation for being cutting edge, but even if there was a green light in the studios to make such a movie, it would be impossible to do anything with.

I'm sure you're right. I don't think Disney is deliberately not making gay characters because they're homophobes, but I do think that making money and being able to market their product as widely as possible and as much as possible matters more to them than LBGQT representation.

People have a lot of nostalgia and and strong feelings about Disney. Sometimes they forget it's a multi-billion dollar company, and the interests of a multi-billion dollar company aren't always going to mesh with the fans.
