So it's halloween and I have no candy. What's the best way to discourage people from trying your house?

Turn off your lights and put a sign on the door

Turn off all lights visible to the street, make sure porch light is off. If possible, don't have a car in the driveway.

I'd love to send my neighbors' rotten little kids to your house.

(da) It's halloween and I have no candy because I live in a country where it's just not a thing, in a small town where it should even less be a thing, in a house with a private garden, and yet I heard someone knocking at the door right after the sun went down. WTF, who's still entering a private property with the lights turned down??? Gah I hope I dont find the door all egged up in the morning.
(Not even my own house, I'm house-sitting for my dad who's away for the week and nobody was supposed to come and see him right now.)

I live in a small town and stopped buying candy years ago. No one has stopped by the house for Halloween in years anyway; everyone brings their kids to the local church instead. (I feel like I should clarify that there were several years where candy was available, but no one stopped by to take said candy, so it was all left over for me. And I love candy but I definitely don't need that much of it so not buying it is for the best. If it's around, I'll eat it.)

So I do what's been mentioned, lights off just in case...it works.

Can confirm that this works. I live at the end of a long drive down the hill.

Guaranteed method to stop getting trick-or-treaters if you're out/have no candy:

1. Turn off lights visible from street. If you have decorations outside with lights, turn those off as well.
2. If you have a doorbell, deactivate it.
3. Leave sign outside that says "Sorry! We're out of candy!" or something similar in a place children/parents can read it.

The few years we've ran out of candy at our house, that always works. They'd skip right by our house even though the neighbors still had candy.

I don''t know. We have a ton of really gross sour candy and no trick or treaters.

This year, I'd say take the light-off option, even if you have to put something up over the windows to do it.

Next year, invest in prunes. I always want to do this, but what trick-or-treaters exist in Australia never enter the complex where I live.
