It's your time so you can do what you want with it, but if they're THAT bad I don't know how you stand being around them or how they haven't turned on you yet. (If they are as easily riled up as mentioned then I wouldn't be surprised if they found something lacking about you in the future.)

I've found that those types tend to be really shitty RPers to boot.

I've never RP'd so I can't add anything to that discussion, but I do wonder how someone who spends so much of their time being abrasive and unpleasant manages to be a decent RP partner. Like, even if you can deal with their shitty personality, if they spend so much of their time involved in internet drama that's less time they have to reply or think about their story and characters; seems like it would be a detriment.

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2015-10-31 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Not to mention that being a thoroughly shitty person incapable of empathy or basic human decency often means their character portrayals are lacking as well. Because they can't understand what makes the character they're playing tick. As a result, a lot of these types will go for melodramatic angsty bullshit rather than craft any believable character development.

Huh, that's an excellent point. (That if you are incapable of empathy, of understanding others feelings or motivations then you would likely have difficulty writing anything with nuance, or any characters that had believable character development. If we're talking about the kind of person completely convinced they know everything then I guess that could bleed into their characters not learning from their mistakes, or not even making them in the first place because they can't be wrong. I guess it could work in a specific setting? Idk.)

But I'm not sure how much OP meant as they said they were trying to make the secret sound funny and people took it the wrong way. Maybe the person/people OP is talking about are a bit unpleasant but that's the extent of it.

My assumption is that whatever these people are doing may or may not be objectively "good", but it pushes all the buttons OP needs pushed, if you see what I mean.

I support this line of thought. I was in an RP group that led by someone who sounded like she was straight out of the BPD thread yesterday. She came up with plot ideas that at the time were entertaining, but on reflection were melodramatic and tropetastic.

Yeah, definitely this.

I'm also, I'll admit, a little taken aback by the overall attitude of the secret. It's so...serious. Isn't RP for fun? I get wanting decent plotting and characterization, but is that worth treating it like it's a competitive sport?

Yeeeea, it reads like serious business. (Maybe even a bit hostile?) OP could've wanted to spice their secret up with that tone, but I've always thought RP (like fanfiction) was something done out of fun and enjoyment. I do believe you can be serious about your pasttime while still finding it fun and enjoyable, but OP sounds a bit...competitive, yea.

I guess I applaud their dedication to their craft, though if we're talking actual internet bullies then I don't understand how it's worth it. (That, however, would be why this is a secret.)

tbh i expected ppl to take it as tongue-in-cheek, because it's like the go to spoofed line from all those reality tv competitions

o well

Hey, don't feel bad! I did take into consideration that you might be having some fun with your secret, trying to make it sound more exciting, so I didn't take it too seriously. I wasn't ENTIRELY sure it was a joke (here on the internet there is always a possibility it is not, lol) but I can see what you were trying for.

I bet most everyone who has made multiple secrets has had one (Or more) backfire. I've never had one start wank but I have confused people because I'm shit at explaining myself, lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
hahahahahaha you've never met any RPers, have you

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2015-10-31 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. RPers are a fucking scary lot.

Perhaps anon fits their clique more than they realise.

I don't want to judge harshly without much info because OP could always be making these people sound worse then they are for dramatic effect (Which I'm sure is a thing that happens on a regular basis here on f!s, exaggeration), but if they're honest to god bullies, we're talking stalking, harassing others and being a general asshole and nuisance, then I'd think, “How could you hang with people you knew were doing this?"

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
RPdom often has a pretty low bar for what counts as an asshole or a bully. The people OP's playing with might be genuinely vitriolic jackasses, or they might be less prone to fits of hyperactive OOC enthusiasm, and occasionally ask someone to rephrase a post that's difficult to parse without padding it with three paragraphs of stutter-typing apologies and appeals to ego than the rest of OP's crowd.
