As much as I disliked Buffy/Angel (or Buffy/Spike for that matter), I think saying that Edward/Bella is exactly like Buffy/Angel is a serious misreading of both relationship dynamics. There are some surface similarities, sure, but they are nothing alike.
Like someone pointed out above, Buffy is a far more proactive character who is able to defend herself. In addition, she is NOT all about Angel, since she has a shit-ton of other priorities in her life. Like, say, saving lives on a nightly basis. Or getting out of high school alive. Or...
Well, you get the picture.
Also, Buffy's breakdown after sending Angel to hell is a lot more understandable that Bella's page after page of blank pages. And once she was done with her walk-about, she was back to fight another day, despite the fact that as far as she knew Angel was never coming back.
Plus, after Angel left, Buffy soldiered on with her life.
Bella? Basically a cow to slaughter. Her entire life centered around Edward, even when Edward wasn't around. She has no personality of her own that isn't in response to Edward. And when it all comes down to it, the entire goal of her character was to be with Edward forever.
Buffy wanted to survive Sunnydale and have a reasonably sane life, for herself AND her friends.
Kind of a huge difference.
And that's not even getting into the differences between Edward and Angel.
Edward never did anything that wouldn't benefit Bella, himself, or his family.
Angel at least grew to be a character who TRIED to do the right thing even when it had no benefit for himself.

I think you're analysis is pretty spot on.
