Haha I was forced to write on this for one of my English requirements in university. I could go on at length about how this entire novel was the author essentially giving someone the middle finger for assuming that since he's "not truly Japanese" (since he has lived outside of Japan for most of his childhood) that there is no way for him to have a Japanese mindset. This is a staggeringly common belief, and was actually used to deny citizenship to some second generation people for a time (i.e. children of immigrants).

It's particularly perfect that he used an English butler for his parallel. He could have chosen anything, but choosing the country of his childhood really strengthens his point.
