I went and watched the show a while after it finished and the general plot was in the cultural consciousness, so it was really interesting to contrast the impression I'd gotten about the plot with how it really plays out. Like, the idea I had was the abovesaid "good dude gets into drug dealing to help his family's money problems and slowly turns nasty," but you get a lot of hints that even early on he is not really that good of a guy.

Like, the first time he talks to Jesse, he doesn't ask for his help or make it an offer to go into business with him. He goes straight to threatening him. And the whole basic thing about his motive, that he's doing this to help his family and pay for the cancer treatments - he's not the one who says it first. Jesse does.

Well, spoilers, but the finale basically has him revealing that he didn't do it for the money or his family's welfare. He did it simply because he wanted to.

I didn't like the show much, but I respected the hell out of it after that.
