Eh, I don't know. I know lots of people who didn't like Katrina and weren't Ichabbie shippers.

On the other hand, it was rather hilarious to me to see the number of Ichabbie shippers hurl misogyny at Katrina for getting in the way of their ship when I had seen many of those same shippers accuse slash fans of misogyny in other fandoms.

Goes to show that "social justice" only matters when it's on your side.

I know lots of people who didn't like Katrina and weren't Ichabbie shippers.

Same. Some people just did. not. like. her. period. At all. I personally did-I do wish the show could've done more with her character*, but I still liked her and found the bits we did know about her to be interesting. Plus, I tend to feel a little sympathetic towards characters that get dumped on so much in a fandom :p.

*(I did find it amusing, though, that fans complained over and over again about how blah Katrina's characterization was, but if the show did dare to try and expand on or explore her character further, those same people turned around and griped that she got all the screen time.

I understand, of course, that they wanted Abbie to get her well-deserved time in the spotlight since, y'know, she IS one of the main characters, and that's logical. But if you don't want a character you don't like getting screen time, then don't whine about the lack of proper character development they get as a result.)

As for the misogyny comments, that reminds me of something that I've noticed in fandom in general that I tend to be really baffled by: I hear fans talk all the time about the problem shows have with "fridging" female characters. They go on and on about how they're tired of female characters dying for "man pain" and how their deaths rob them of the chance at any interesting story and character development and so on. I'm totally on board with them on that sentiment.

But then I find that some of the same fans who complain about that practice are the ones who then turn around and go on and on about how they want a female character they can't stand-Katrina, in this case, or Laurel from "Arrow", to name but a couple notable ones-to be killed off. And at that point, I'm sitting here going, "So...what exactly is the difference between what you're suggesting and show writers choosing to kill female characters?"

(It especially struck me odd that fans wanted Katrina dead in part to help put an end to the "Crane Family Drama" and angst they'd grown so tired of. Because Ichabod's wife dying wouldn't add to his drama and angst, I guess? I never did understand that thinking.)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of a wild statement. I disliked Katrina a lot for how she lied to Ichabod so much when he was so earnestly honest with her. When you're married and that's the situation, the relationship is imbalanced and dangerous for the lied-to partner.

Anyway, you're wrong in your assumption. I friendship Abbie and Ichabod. I think they are the most adorable besties on screen ever with the nosy advice they give each other (and accept) and I want to squoodge them in the biggest sister/brother hug, but they don't have sexual chemistry, at least not yet. If the actors start interjecting it, maybe. They are excellent actors. But right now, they are just friends and I love them as such.

I'm here for Ichabod and Abbie being bros, but Katrina's entire arc and development was an immense clusterfuck. She lied to Ichabod over and over and never felt like she was anything but a terrible plot device. If she had been given more to work with plotwise, she could have been an awesome character, but she was a victim of the terrible S2 writing.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, this. It felt to me like the writers never really had a plan for her character so she ended up doing... well, whatever they needed her to do to provide plot filler. That doesn't really endear you to a character at all. I think she could've been far better if they'd given her more of a role (besides a few "help I'm trapped in limbooooo" scenes here and there) in season 1, and by the time season 2 rolled around it was too late.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Katrina had potential, but the writers didn't do well by her. I was annoyed by her. I admit I wanted her gone, but her last few episodes were enjoyable, when she finally embraced the "dark side" or whatever. I would've liked more dark!Katrina.

I only see Ichabod & Abbie as friends & I hope they remain just friends.

I was so disappointed with how she was handled in S2 after I'd actually really liked her when she was introduced... and honestly, I'm happier having her GONE than suffering through DARK KATRINA, which I have no interest in, but it's not my first choice for her.

I was pretty upset when Grimm looked like it was doing essentially the same thing, too, and didn't even finish the season, but Sleepy Hollow I'll eventually catch up with the new season on.

I'm just not into this 'let's make the love interest evil' thing-- apparently it's something redheaded women are prone to on supernatural shows I watch, but it's just not interesting to me, it's like TV writers don't know how to write an interesting plot if there's a couple that's happy or at least committed to working through their issues...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just not into this 'let's make the love interest evil' thing

This is how I feel, too. I personally wouldn't have minded the idea of Katrina being dark/ambiguous/evil...if I knew her being dark and evil wouldn't lead to the very trope you mention playing out. It just seems a lazy way to get rid of the person standing in the way of the couple-to-be.

Considering supernatural-themed shows can be so imaginative, and especially considering "Sleepy Hollow" proved in the first season how creative and original they could be with the genre and formula, there's got to be more creative and original ways they could let Katrina go or end things with her and Ichabod than defaulting to the usual "kill her off/make her evil" mode.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like the whole EVIL KATRINA thing either. If the show makers wanted to off the characters, why couldn't they have given her a heroic death?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Why couldn't she have perhaps died to fully cement Ichabod and his son's relationship more? I would not have objected to seeing Jeremy/Henry more, and Katrina acting as a sort of impetus to make things just a tad more difficult for both sides of the war again.

Then again, I love John Noble so...

That would have been so much better, yeah. Like, I might have felt more sad over her dying, but I would have been happier in how her character was handled.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I'm "glad" about her death, but it didn't make a huge impact on me and I'm not an Ichabbie shipper. I think it's a shame the show took so long to do anything with her character and never really made good use of her in the ensemble. By the time she turned evil and died, I just sort of felt meh about it.

Really?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really happy with the way they got rid of Katrina, but since they didn't seem to know what to do with her (She's a really powerful witch! Except when she needs to do something powerful for the story. She's good! Except for all the lying and deception. It's for the greater good! Well, not all of it. She's evil! Why, again?), I am kind of glad they let go of that character. I don't really ship Ichabod and Abbie - I'm kind of fine either way, if they get together over the course of the series that would be okay, if they don't, that would be fine too.

I really liked Katrina and was rooting for her to get free and join Ichabod and contribute in her own unique way. But they pushed the whole Katrina/HH thing *way* too hard, made her lie and act like an idiot just to push the plot along and it just...got boring.

I think Abbie and Ichabod make the very best of friends and partners and I just hope hope hope they never have an intimate relationship. (I also love that Jenny is now part of the regular cast and we get to see her use her years of experience as Corbin's assistant and just basically be bad-ass all over the place. Corbin's son, though, needs to take a chill.)

Maybe he'll calm down once he realizes there's such a thing as a candle burning at both ends?

Or once he realizes that Jenny knows a *hell* of a lot more than he does and he needs to *follow her lead* and take a back seat. And quit going overboard on the Daddy angst and just calm down.

*pats him*

[personal profile] notgayfornobunaga 2015-11-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That too. Maybe if he loses their lead enough.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's ridiculous.

Some of the people crowing about her death are raging Ichabod/Irving or Ichabod/Abraham shippers. Presumably there are a few Ichabod/Hawley shippers too, though most of the ones I've met in the wild are pretty low key.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd wondered how big the slash portion of the fandom might be, and which pairings in that field were popular :D. I'm definitely up for some Ichabod/Irving, but Ichabod/Abraham sounds rather intriguing, too...

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ichabod/Irving and Ichabod/Abraham are the most popular, but popular's a relative statement in this fandom. I've seen some Ichabod/Hawley and Jeremy/Abraham, too, but it's a lot less common.

If you're looking for fic, it's pretty sparse across the board, though. Ichabod/Abbie really is the juggernaut ship.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I figure it'd all pale next to Ichabod/Abbie in general. It's just interesting to hear what would be the "main" pairings in the slash section all the same.

Jeremy/Abraham? I shouldn't be surprised, and yet...:p. Ichabod/Hawley could be fun to play with, given Hawley's propensity to irritate the crap out of Ichabod :D.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
So, all TV critics and 99.75% of Sleepy Hollow's viewing audience are raging Ichabbie shippers?

Okay then.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2015-11-02 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to an extent, you're right, I ship those two. But not very seriously, so that part is wrong.

Mostly, I just found her boring as hell and badly written. Plus...as nice as the actress is....she was not very good.

Still need to watch this seasons episodes though. I've been very lax on watching ANYTHING so far this year (MLP, Sleepy Hollow, Sailor Moon Crystal, etc...stupid SWTOR just upped an grabbed my everything)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you're not wrong. I hate Katrina and love Ichabbie and I don't care.
