Circumcision has been standard practice for newborns in the US for a while. It's supposedly for health and hygiene reasons (gunk getting stuck under the foreskin). These days, I believe there's an opt-out, but I'm not sure because I don't plan on having a baby.

what do you mean, an opt-out? circumcision isn't like the military.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
As in it's included in the standard birthing care, like vitamin shots, eye ointment, cord clamping, and etc. So you have to specifically ask for them not to do it, rather than asking for it.

That's not true. Hospitals don't just cut boys' penises without asking parents.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-05 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
They ask when you're doing your intake at the hospital the month before your due date whether you plan to circumsize or not. They don't just assume you're going to.

That seems really unlikely, and horrifying if actually true.

However, even if it is, saying "do not cut my child's foreskin off" should suffice as an "opt-out". Saying you don't want it done and them doing it anyway is not only all kinds of wrong but would open them up to nasty lawsuits.

nayrt

It's not true. That would be extremely unethical and illegal, for a hospital to just do it without asking the parents. It's not a matter of "opting out", it's you tell them if you want to do it or not.

It might have changed or might depend on where. I know one of my relatives is circumcised because they forgot to opt out of it and his parents were, needless to say, really pissed off about it. They already had two other intact boys and no intention of getting any of their kids snipped like that.

oh gosh. That's horrible. :(

I wonder if that was a more-or-less isolated fuckup rather than a universal policy?

Was there a lawsuit? I'd be tempted to bring one. That is really awful.

Good. And I'm not surprised. But you never know.

It isn't true. Before they even knew my child's gender they asked if I was going to want circumcised or not.

One lady was horrified when I said no, but that's another story. lol

lol, tell the story. Sounds horrible and of course now I'm curious.

It wasn't actually all that great. She was horrified and tried to talk me into it, which is actually sort of unethical, but whatever.

Sorry for my delay, I didn't have notifications on.

Was it a nurse?

[personal profile] mishey22 2016-01-03 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a nurse, it was one of the techs that took my vitals and stuff.

They also asked if I wanted my tubes tied and took not of it, but then didn't do it and said that I should have reminded the doctor when I was having the baby... during the emergency c-section they drugged me up for.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's not automatic in the US. These days it's rarely even covered by Medicaid. There's still a high rate of circumcision, but it's still lower than it used to be.
